Corsi vs. The Original QualComp For The Oilers' Forwards

  93021341_medium

In the comments section of my article about the progression of those ten forwards that have played for the Oilers in each of the last three seasons, till_horcoff_is_coach asked what those charts would look like had I used the original QualComp metric developed by Gabriel Desjardins at Behind The Net.  His answer is after the jump.

Star-divide

The first plot is Raw Corsi versus QualComp (the original):

The second plot is Relative Corsi versus QualComp (the original):

Anything jump out as being significantly different aside from Shawn Horcoff owning the upper quarter of the plot and still seeing no reason to dump Robert Nilsson?

Pouliot looking like a tough minutes centre? Cogliano facing tougher comp every year? Gagner facing easier comp every year? Penner looking just as good as Hemsky?

Cogliano’s progression looks significantly better when plotted this way, and Gagner less so (though still in the right direction). Changing the position for players like Pisani and Pouliot shows a very different progression/regression.

Thanks for plotting it Derek. I can see this type of chart becoming a staple for viewing team progression in a snapshot. It very intuitively shows a lot of information.

The names at the top vs the names at the bottom also look like a much better match to my eye from last season. Am I alone in that aspect?

As for more dimensions, here are some ideas:
color of dot as qual team
size of the dot as TOI

I’m in no way asking for you to plot this, just stoking the fire for your own ideas and analysis.

I seriously can’t understand how you guys aren’t getting paid for this kind of analysis. Like, in gold bars and attractive women.

Now that I’ve kissed ass…. Would it be possible to see this for a team that actually seems to have its shit together? Like, could we compare the chart of the worst team in the league to a team that seems well run and put together? Like the wings or hawks maybe?

The lottery winners versus the Cup winners seems like an apt comparison. Hawks 07-08 to 09-10 versus the same for the Oilers? One team regressing and the other progressing?

Yeah, you’d want a team that shows obvious progression I guess, like lottery to contender in three years.

It’s a perfect contrast, really. The Oilers just missed the lottery in ’07, while the Hawks won it. ’07 was the year Kane and Toews and Gagner and Cogliano all entered the League, and if I remember correctly, the year of a couple of real barnburners between the two teams.

The rest is history.
