...with the Calgary Flames. It's a two-way deal that will pay him the league minimum ($500,000) in the NHL and $105,000 if he plays in the AHL. Hard to believe he wouldn't have taken a one-way deal to say with the Oilers. Harder to believe that the Oilers are likely going to give a one-way contract to J.F. Jacques instead. Stone is a physical player who had pretty good results when healthy. Nice move by the Flames.

I wonder if there are still question marks around his knee?

by Psyche10 on Jul 6, 2010 7:41 PM MDT reply actions

Well I kept hearing whispers of the word “degenerative” last year which is never good. It’s also consistent with how his comeback fizzled out. Still, a two-way contract at NHL minimum is a cheap bet from the Flames’ perspective.

Best of luck to the Calgary Flames this upcoming season.

That’s pretty much it. If his knee doesn’t get better, little is lost and if it does get better they have a serviceable player at minimum wage.

Brutal. Is this Glencross 2.0?

by DarrenV on Jul 6, 2010 10:35 PM MDT reply actions

Well, he hasn’t shown as much at the NHL level as Glencross had and there is an injury concern there so this would seem to be less bad. On the other hand, he was also asking for a much smaller commitment than Glencross was, so in that way the mistake is worse since there was very little risk to bringing him back at that price. Similar situations though in terms of where the players ended up and how they became UFAs.

On Stone's Knee
Stone missed the final three months of last season with a knee injury, and there was some speculation the unrestricted free agent would miss the start of the upcoming campaign, too.

On Tuesday night, though, he refuted those reports, saying "all signs right now are that I’ll be ready for camp and ready to go."
