Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Khabibulin Insurance

BUFFALO, NY - NOVEMBER 11: Nikolai Khabibulin #35 of the Edmonton Oilers gathers the puck during the game against the Buffalo Sabres at HSBC Arena on November 11, 2009 in Buffalo, New York. (Photo by Rick Stewart/Getty Images)

Nikolai Khabibulin goes to trial  July 7 on his Extreme DUI charges. This is only fitting as, for Oiler fans, last season's goaltending situation was a trial. I hope Steady Steve is thinking of ways to make next season a "net positive". As always, I'm trying to help and decided to take a quick look at AHL goaltenders. Twenty of them played 30 AHL games in each of the past two seasons.

Star-divide

Their Names, Shots Against, Goals Against, Save % over the two years:

Jonathan Bernier 3258 240 0.926
Nathan Lawson 2002 151 0.925
Scott Munroe 3024 231 0.924
Cory Schneider 2929 228 0.922
Drew MacIntyre 2686 217 0.919
Cedrick Desjardins 1964 159 0.919
Mark Dekanich 2019 167 0.917
Jeff Frazee 2795 232 0.917
Jhonas Enroth 3183 267 0.916
Tyler Weiman 2427 210 0.913
Corey Crawford 2630 228 0.913
Justin Peters 3063 270 0.912
Mike Brodeur 2049 183 0.911
Peter Mannino 1955 175 0.910
Devan Dubnyk 3087 280 0.909
Leland Irving 2010 184 0.908
Josh Tordjman 2675 252 0.906
John Curry 2585 246 0.905
Daniel Larsson 2458 234 0.905
Ben Bishop 2162 218 0.899

Munroe, Weiman & Tordjman are all unrestricted free agents.

Here's Hockey's Future on Scott Monroe: "Munroe is a strong positional goaltender who also possesses excellent puck handling skills, evidenced by his effectiveness in corralling dump-ins (particularly in shorthanded situations)."

Additionally, there were six more AHLers who had Save % of .915 or better this past season:

Mike McKenna 0.921
Matt Climie 0.919
Braden Holtby 0.917
Curtis Sanford 0.916
Dany Sabourin 0.915
Dustin Tokarski 0.915

None of the above are unrestricted.

Oil should go hard after Corey Schneider. Is he available?

The Canucks have already signed him to a two-year deal. He’ll be their NHL backup this year.

How about Wade Dubielewicz… him and Dubnyk could be the Doobie Brothers.

Still some FA goalies out there too… http://www.capgeek.com/free_agents.php?Year=2010&Team=All&Position=G&FAType=2

Yeah I like Dubie the First as insurance. Would be solid for OKC and decent short term insurance should there be goaltending problems on the big club (heaven forbid).

Theodore, Jose 0.911
Nabokov, Evgeni 0.910
Lalime, Patrick 0.907
Emery, Ray 0.905

I don’t see any Craig Anderson’s there
That’s why i went to the AHL to see if one was lurking.

What are those save percentage numbers?

by Scott Reynolds on Jul 6, 2010 10:43 PM MDT up reply actions

You would think that guys facing 2000 shots would be able to save more than 200…. ;)
