Brule signed a 2 year deal at 1.85 million. He has avoided arbitration. I think this is great as we have him for 2 years. The term is very good too.

More from The Copper & Blue

Well, that was Ugly

Terrific. I like this signing without the need for arbitration. Brule is on the shady side of $2 MM, albeit a trifle more expensive than the $1.55 that the C&B’s independent and totally fair arbitrator awared in our mock arbitration (which was predicated on a one-year pact.) Turns out if I had simply split the difference between Ben’s requested $2.7 and Scott’s proffered $1.125 I would have come within spittin’ distance of the real deal.

If I understand things correctly, Brule will still have one year of RFA status when this deal expires.

And all this just in time for Derek to wax ecstatic about Brule in our prospects series. I can hardly wait.

I think this is great…less than 2 million. There is a good chance that Brule outperforms his contract.

If everyone thinks that a player is underrated, then he ceases to be one.

So do I. The key of course is whether he keeps improving. If he’s only the player he showed last year it’s something of an overpay. The bright side is he improved immensely in 2009-10 and I see no reason to suppose he’s going to have suddenly reached his ceiling and just stop. That said, I made the same assumption about Robert Nilsson two summers ago. Whatever, Tambellini has made his bed with Brule in it, so what else can we do but hope the kid takes it as a vote of confidence and runs with the opportunity he’s certain to continue receiving. He’s a 23-year-old kid with a plus shot and a nasty edge, and if he can learn to think the game a little bit better he’s going to be a nice asset.

The other good news is that with his ongoing acts of charity and caring for that disfigured young boy, Brule has given Oiler fans at least one reason to have some pride in the local team. The hockey gods know there’s been few enough points of pride in the past 12 months. (See: Khabibulin, Nikolai) Just from a community perspective, I would have been loath to see a guy like that walk or even be subjected to arbitration. Not here, not now.

I think Tambs probably did just split the difference between our mock arbitrations. That is the simplest, most logical explanation. I BROOK NO ARGUMENT.

To steal a word from Bruce, terrific is the word.

A bit more than I expected, but fantastic news. The fact it’s a two year deal also makes my day.

Way to go, squad.
