Around SBN: How The Kings Beat The Coyotes: Lather, Rinse, Repeat

As per Jay Gold, Robert Nilsson has signed with Salavat Yulaev Ufa. I wrote about his penchant for the marvelous previously and I will certainly miss his passing ability. He remains a top-notch talent without the game. When it comes down to it, he was done in by his penchant for disappearing and Kevin Lowe's penchant for overpaying everybody.

unrelated but Clarke Mcarthur who scored 1 less goal and assist then Brule was just awarded a 2.4 million arbitration. Brule played in 20% less games though. He will probably be looking at the 2.5-3 mill award.

Although this is certainly bad news for the Oilers, at least the Thrashers walked away. That means Brule’s agent can’t use this contract as a comparable.

I’m surprised Nilsson couldn’t find a deal with an NHL club. Either that, or Ufa is just paying him big money. I haven’t seen any terms anywhere. Also, who’s Jay Gold?

I’ve been expecting him to sign with PIT since he was bought out. You’d think a one year 1 mil deal should have been appealing to both sides?

Weird. A friends and I were discussing that the other day. Nilsson at a million or less is a really good fit in Pittsburgh.

It just seems like such a nice fit on paper. PIT could use a skilled cheap winger, and I’m sure Nilsson would love to play in the East with either Crosby or Malkin, put some points up, and take it from there.

Especially because their power play struggles from time to time and Nilsson has always been good there.

I suspect Pittsburgh would be weary about is utter lack of physicality. They don’t tend to bring in wingers with such limited one dimensional games, especially when that one dimension often disappears for long stretches. Maybe I’m being too critical, though.

Does anybody know how Nilsson’s signing with Ufa affects the Oilers’ cap space? Is his case any different than other players who’ve had their cap hit removed after signing in Europe?

by Andrew W on Jul 21, 2010 11:24 PM MDT up reply actions

No. We bought him out, so that cap hit remains

by SumOil on Jul 22, 2010 7:35 AM MDT up reply actions

Yep. We’re still stuck with his cap “hit” of -$83k for this season and his cap hit of $417k for next season.
