The Most Interesting Take on the Kovalchuk Signing...
... was written before Kovalchuk signed. Tyler's discussion of the PA at large being in conflict with star players over very long contracts is particularly note-worthy on the day that the longest contract since the lockout is signed. If you haven't read it already, I heartily recommend it.

Let’s say that Kovalchuk retires after the big money ends – we’ll even say he plays out the 2019-20 year for the 3.5M he’s scheduled to make.
Are the Devils still on the hook for the $6M cap hit? Does it matter that this deal was signed when Kovalchuk was 27?
I’m thinking the whole Khabibulin situation here; knowing that the Oilers will likely be on the hook for his 3.75 if he calls it a day because Khabi is an over 35 contract.
What about the Devils in this instance?
Cheers
No, the Devils are not on the hook for the contract if Kovalchuk retires. It’s one of the reasons that players who are 35+ have a much harder time getting long-term deals compared to younger players.

I hadn’t been understanding the whole uproar about escrow and these long contracts, but now I do. Thanks for the link.

Isn’t it the longest contract ever signed by an NHL team? Gretzky’s 21-year deal was a WHA deal, and the next-longest I can think of are DiPietro (15) and Ovechkin (13).

I was trying to not give Bruce a platform to talk about Gretzky’s personal services contract (so much for that), but I do believe that you’re correct.
