Oilers Sign Theo Peckham
Bruce mentioned this signing a few days ago, but that was before the terms of the deal were available. I was surprised to find out that Peckham's one-year contract is a two-way deal (though he would still need to clear waivers to get sent down to the AHL). Once that was discovered, I was further surprised to learn that he will be getting paid only $550,000 if he plays in the NHL. That comes as a surprise because Peckham's qualifying offer would have seen him earn $643,500, which means he must have taken less in order to get a better AHL wage; but even that is only $65,000. This is obviously a minor signing, but Steve Tambellini (or whoever was the negotiator) really got the most out of it.

I guess it’s easier to deliver value contracts at the lower end rather than the top end – but full kudos to Tambo for coming good with this one. Of course, you’d need to deliver about ten of these to overcome the stinking albatross carcass that is Khabi’s contract.
As for Peckham, I have to admit to finding him as much suspect as prospect. It seems to me that, because the guy can undoubtedly fight, so many other flaws get overlooked by fans. That said, for a team that fielded Taylor ‘Just Beat Me’ Chorney and Jason ’Where’s the Puck?’ Strudwick for half the games last season, expectations should be suitably low on the D-corps. I hope Peckham proves me wrong.
You and I are of the same mind on Peckham. I’m not really impressed with him as a player and agree that his A+ in the “toughness” department give him a pass on a lot of other things. I doubt he has much of a career, but as you said, I hope he proves us wrong.
As for value contracts at the low end of the roster, it’s a nice skill to have. Speeds wrote a good article on how making a bunch of tiny financial mistakes can add up. The same is of course true of a bunch of tiny financial victories
