By the Blue Jackets. Scott Howson is a professional moron. That is all.

Well, it’s not so much all as my original sentiment. I should also say that I’m happy for Moreau and I sincerely hope he does well there. Further, a solid thank you to him for his contribution to Edmonton as a community over the last ten years. I’m sure Moreau himself is pretty excited too.

Howson just felt like he owed us for the Hejda thing.

I’m also pleased that Ethan found a home without the buyout embarrassment. Thanks Howson…

Any thoughts on the supposed POS for Vandermeer deal?

by Stephen Sheps on Jun 30, 2010 12:17 PM MDT reply actions

I think the Yotes just bought O’Sullivan out.

Very good move by the Coyotes (in terms of getting out of the Vandemeer contract). O’Sullivan’s buyout was 1/3rd his salary instead of 2/3rds. Probably saved about 400k.

Not a fan of getting Vandemeer, at least not at $2.3 mil.

I think you need to discount Vandermeer’s salary by whatever POS’s buyout hit would have been. MC79 came up with a net cost of $1.5 MM which seems closer to value. Slightly pricey for a third pairing D, but barely half of what Steve Staios was making for a similar role. IOne thing’s for sure, we needed third pairing defenders and we still need at least one. Trading an underperforming smurf to fill a need and cap relief is not a bad trade at all IMO.

Patty O sullivan for Jim Vandermeer

For 2.5 million dollars its somewhat possible we would have gotten a player whose ability exceeds that of Vandermeer. On the other hand its a one year pact which is difficult to obtain, it commits us to nothing long term and we could do worse than having Jim Vandermeer as our 5th or sixth defenseman.

I hope they think he’s a sixth defenseman. There are going to be some real bargains out there, I think.

I don’t think it’s difficult to get a bottom pairing defender for less money than Vandermeer on a one year term. A guy like Shane Hnidy would seem to be similar and he signed for one year at $0.8M a year ago. There will be guys like that available again this season. That said, Vandermeer is a good enough bottom pairing guy and the Oilers don’t spend any of 2011-12’s cap space with the deal so I’m okay with it, especially since this kind of player tends to have a bit of value around the deadline.
