Jason Spezza Trade Rumors

Word on the street is that Jason Spezza is unimpressed with the consistent media and fan criticism he receives in the nation's capital. Although nothing has come to fruition yet, I was wondering if, given the opportunity, Oil fans would do the Dany Heatley deal from last year substituting in Spezza for everybody's favourite all-star.

So what do you think? Would Andrew Cogliano, Ladislav Smid, and Dustin Penner be a reasonable deal for the superbly talented centre with the crazy ass laugh or is his 7-year 49 million-dollar contract too much for the rebuilding Oilers to take on? Furthermore, would Ottawa evaluate Spezza, their only legitimate scoring centre, as equal to Heatley and subsequently even consider the deal? I'm kind of torn on this issue and am interested in what you guys think.

I had a lot of interest in Heatley and wasn’t in favor of that trade. Also, Tambellini has enough work filling out the D as it is… to give up Smid now would make that even more difficult to pull off.

This trade wouldn’t make sense for the sens either, as they’d have to replace a 1C.

In no universe this side of Paradise would I trade Dustin Penner, Ladislav Smid, and Andrew Cogliano for Jason Spezza. Spezza’s a better player than Penner, of course, but not enough to drag us into the playoffs and the last thing we need to do is take on more bad contracts and torpedo even more depth.

I’ve got no problems in general terms with trading Cogliano. Smid is the Oilers defenseman I’d least like to move, and none of the forwards have anywhere near Penner’s value (save Hemsky, but he’s at the bottom of his value right now and I wouldn’t like to trade him anyway). I don’t think there’s a deal to be made here, fun though it is to imagine.

I didn’t want Heatley for that deal and I certainly don’t want Spezza. I’d rather have Stephen Weiss than Spezza for a whole load of reasons.

He’s outstanding and on a great contract. He’s a reverse-Oiler.

I agree entirely. Just find it funny you are able to mention Stephen Weiss in a Spezza discussion.

Spezza would be great but …
1. Getting rid of Smid would be dumb now
2. He is not worth all 3
3. I would throw in Cogliano and Souray
4. He probably wouldn’t show up and demand a trade like everyone else.lol
5. I’m not even sure Spezza is what the Oilers need right now….

A soft player, who makes way more money than they’re actually worth? Sounds like an Oiler to me.
The fact that Tambo hasn’t already signed the papers kind of impresses me.

there’s no hope at all; lets trade for Horcoff and O’Sullivan; Alternative Souray and Moreau

I would love to see a line of Spezza, Nilsson and POS hit the ice. Just to see the heads exploding.

I think it would be a matter of feeling the head exploding. Doesn’t sound at all like fun.

Get rid of DEAD WEIGHTS FIRST!!!!

C’mon before anything else I think the OILS gotta evaluate/create a core group. Which was lacking for years now. They need to identify their key guys and move foward. With great prospects in the pipeline (not only for now but years ahead) Oilers have to shed some layers off! POS+ Moreau+Sourray I believe must go. New signings are AWESOME (especially MPS) getting rid of scouts and trainers…meh…now they should address the PLAYERS. Good future ahead, tough decisions in the present.

I’m not sure that a core group can be borne out of evaluation, nor can it be created simply because someone wants one. I think that the team is making strides towards player development improvements, but I’m not sure what you mean by “evaluate/create”.

Simply means that the coaches need to see whose gonna be here in 2010-2011 (and onwards) and work on their roles. Example last year they had POS on the PK UNIT…really does that work? A guy who was a MINUS 32 killing penalties?!!? Evaluate the players on hand and continue to develope them. If not create a way to obtain it whether it comes via draft, trade, player developement.

And if spezza can’t handle the media in our nations capital…what makes you think that he could handle it in the city of champs?
