As per TSN, Robert Nilsson, Patrick O'Sullivan and ThecaptainEthanMoreau have all been placed on waivers. The purge continues. It's the end of an era in Edmonton now, and despite how horrible Ethan has been, we should remember what he was capable of in his prime.

Agreed, no actual decision has been made, but this is a very big first step towards a changing of the guard—something we can all be thankful for.

Well, the fact that these three players are both on waivers does confirm that they have, at best, very little positive value via trade. I know that’s more confirming suspicions than it is news but it’s still good to know.

I’m actually hopeful that they don’t buy anybody out. I don’t mind at all if they count against this year’s cap, but I would much prefer not spend money from 2011-12 on guys that won’t be playing. If that means paying Moreau to stay at home out of the payroll budget, well, so be it.

It stops them from spending to the limit next year as well, which is probably a good thing for almost all GM’s with a young team that is growing.

See, I actually think that 2011-12 is going to be one of their best windows to win since they’ll have a bunch of ELC’s, plus Hemsky and Penner. I hope that’s a “go for it” year.

Fair enough… similar to your stance on Colorado’s upcoming season.
I always look to becoming a long term contender (SJ,Det right now), as opposed to pushing for a one year stab. Not saying that doing one precludes the other, but short term benefits tend to have long term costs. While I have some optimism that Tambellini is going in the right direction, hoping they successfully do both exceeds either my optimism or just my range of focus.

I wonder that buying out Nilsson sets a better example for Brule’s contract negotiations. It’s a step higher than just stating Nilsson’s contract was a mistake.
Other than that I would prefer to keep him on board. He seems like a good substitute for where a rookie isn’t (ie. if one doesn’t show big in camp then let Nilsson warm the bench and when called up then send Nilsson back down to help the farm).

I’d definitely rather bury Moreau in the minors than buy him out.
Actually, I’m not sure about buying out O’Sullivan either. Last year was his worst career season by a nautical mile. We all know he’s not actually that bad and when he’s good he can be pretty healthy.
On the other hand, the Oilers are more abusive than Patty’s dad could ever dream of…

Listen, I just got over Todd Marchant. Losing Pouliot and Pisani in one week might be too much for me. There’s only one Oiler left who I can at all like for reasons other than the laundry he’s wearing and that’s Ales Hemsky who, lest we forget, Tambellini tried to trade for the second overall pick.

I can only recommend my approach to Pouliot. Take a LONG breath in… long… I’m hoping by the time I exhale it that they will have signed a proven replacement with similar money.
It still has a chance to make sense. Heck, even if it doesn’t, if this is the worst move of the summer then it will have to be regarded as pretty damn good considering all the things to be done.

Wait… did I just imply that there’s going to be much worse things to come?
Shht. Ok, I’ll just chill till we see the return for Souray/Cogs… then I’ll rethink this slow breathing approach.

Good point. I figured the puck-to-the-eye picture was meant to be symbolic of getting bought out.

I thought it was because when you look into Ken Lowe’s bald spot, you can see your soul.
