Sharks 5 - Avalanche 0, Game Five Scoring Chances

This was a tough loss for Colorado to take.  According to their fans, this is the kind of game the Avs need to play to win.  Outshot 3-2 and outchanced 2-1 at even strength, the Avs suffered through some terrible luck to lose this one 5-0.  I don't think that Craig Anderson can be expected to post another save percentage below .980 for the rest of the series, so the Sharks are going to have to get lucky to win.

Actually, this was just an extension of the previous three games.  The Sharks were tilting the ice from the drop of the puck and didn't let up until there were five minutes to go.  Anderson's back finally gave out from the weight of the rest of the team and he was chased in the third period.  The interesting part now will be the change in the narrative.  When the Sharks were dominating play and not scoring, journalists decided that it was bad karma, psychological baggage and lingering memories, and Avs' fans said crazier things.  Now that we get a game in which the Avs luck has ran out, what is the new narrative?  Anderson is tired?  Pavelski is the new best player on the Sharks?  Nabokov has turned it around?

When the game was out of reach and the Sharks were sitting back, the Avs reeled off six straight chances to make it close, but it was 26-12 overall before that stretch.

During pregame, the Sharks announcers talked about how well Paul Stastny was fairing against Joe Thornton and how well Matt Duchene was playing overall.  I guess they can't talk about the Sharks' domination at even strength when the series is 2-2, but the chances don't lie - the Avs' top two lines have been in trouble for most of this series.  Game five was a little different in that Duchene held up better because he was out against Manny Malhotra and his new linemates Dany Heatley and Logan Couture, rather than Joe Pavelski.  Duchene posted a positive Corsi and his best measure in the Chances department.  Stastny?  Still struggling against top minutes with inferior wingers.  The Avs only have one legitimate top six forward and the Sharks are exploiting those overmatched forwards.

Avs fans amuse me (not just them, most fans, but right now it’s avs fans).

Clutchness, stick gripping and mind games are legitimate things at the NHL level, but luck is a cop-out argument.

If San Jose was gripping their sticks, wouldn’t it be happening long before they got to the scoring areas? They seem to make it there fine.

I’m not sure what’s controversial about the notion that players come up against a hot goalie, start fine-tuning their shots, then fine-tune them too much and start shooting wide/into the chest a little more. Seems like human nature to me. In a small sample, I bet that happens all the time. It’s also eminently correctable, as last night’s results show pretty effectively.

Randomness happens a lot in a game as inherently chaotic as hockey, but to deny human nature as an element of a game played by humans is to put on a big-ass set of blinders when doing your analysis, if you ask me.

Although I agree with you on this point, it’s difficult to measure these effects and some of the things we can measure make it difficult to believe. Gabe has pointed out that the Sharks have a shooting percentage of 6.9% when down by one goal and 1.6% when the game is tied. It doesn’t make sense to me that they would struggle to make their shots because of psychological factors only when the game is tied.

My response to that question was that when they’re down, they’re just trying to get it on net, never mind finding the perfect shot. I also admitted that it was sketchy and I was probably overplaying Devil’s Advocate a little, but fuck it, in for a penny…

Ha! Yeah, you’re probably not surprised that I don’t find that convincing. If “just throwing it on net” was working so well, they’d probably just keep doing it!

They seem to make it there fine.

And often! They’re getting a scoring chance once every two-and-a-half minutes this series.

If not for Anderson, this series ended two nights ago.

Actually, if not for Anderson, they’re in the draft lottery again, but that’s almost beside the point at this rate.

I’m not really sure why Chris Stewart keeps being overlooked as a quality forward (maybe because he’s been invisible this series). But even among relative Corsi, SFOn/60 etc he’s got pretty decent stats on this Avs team, even when he’s 4th on the team in QoC.

But yeah, the Avs have been completely dominated this series, especially after game 1

He’s getting whipped in this series so I’m not seeing him as a legit forward. Small sample size, I know, but he might be a legit forward on a non-playoff team.

For a guy his age and in his role, he’s doing pretty good.

He’ll be a goody at 25.

He’s been awful this series. But this season he was pretty good, for a sophomore. Last season only had ~50 games. I Think he’ll be a good forward for any team.

Derek: With about a minute and a half left in the second, CBC had the chances at 20-5 for the Sharks. Just for interest.
