Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Staios and Smid Return

Both Steve Staios and Ladislav Smid are set to return to the lineup tonight against the Phoenix Coyotes.  To make room for them on the roster both Taylor Chorney and Alex Plante have been sent back to Springfield.  Both clubs can certainly use the help.  Since Chorney's recall on January 25th the Falcons have allowed 33 goals in 6 games, or 5.5 goals per game.  Chorney may not be the best defensive defender, but I have to believe that he and Alex Plante will help that number to come down.  Both players showed pretty well in Edmonton, though I myself liked Plante's game more and am quite encouraged by his progress as a prospect this season.

As for the NHL team, the combination of Chorney and Visnovsky did not look good.  A lot of that has been Visnovsky.  Hopefully a return to a more familiar partner in Smid will help to improve his effectiveness.  It sure would be nice if the same could be said for Staios' return.  When he went out Souray was healthy and playing with Tom Gilbert while Staios played with Denis Grebeshkov.  With all of the defenders out of the lineup Grebeshkov's defensive responsibilities increased but his performance did not make the requisite improvement.  Unfortunately, Souray is still out of the lineup so the coaches have decided to leave Grebeshkov with Gilbert and have returned Staios to the ever-awesome paring of Staios-Strudwick.

I agree wholeheartedly that we should be “paring” Staios and Strudwick.

Love those Freudian blips.

Thanks for pointing it out instead of correcting it… }:(

It is true though, at least in a metaphorical sense. If we got literal with it I’m sure PETA would be all over us for skinning turkeys.

It was far funnier the way you wrote it. Made me laugh.

BTW, I’m out of the loop for this one, got another commitment. Enjoy the game, everyone!

I’m very happy that Alex Plante survived his time at the adult table. Hopefully, this is another positive step in his development curve.

He didn’t look as bad as Strudwick, to be quite honest. He needs to work on the wheels though.

Oh, of course. That’s been the knock since his draft year. He barely caught up to WHL-level skating his last year.

But other than that, he kept his head up, he was physical, he was decent passing the puck, and he was only caught badly out of position once.

In any other org, he probably gets two more years in the A.

Sounds about right. Hell, Alzner’s been a better defenceman since day one, and he’s been up and down with Washington for two years.

With any kind of feet, he would have a real shot next year. He seemed to have a decent stride once he got going, just lacked agility. He needs to spend some time with a sprinter to work on his explosiveness.

Wasn’t there a lady skating coach that’s helped a few of the Oilers recently?

I was pretty happy with Plante’s play. Held his own out there, even posted a +1 over the 4 games which on this team is outstanding. Given the fact he was mostly paired with Strudwick, it’s downright astonishing. Of course the other school of thought is that the veteran saw the rookie through his initiation phase, but I dropped out of that school some time ago.

4 games was just right. Plante was beginning to be exposed on the road, esp. v. COL (where he wsas hardly alone). He should go down with a positive experience under his belt and a better idea of what he needs to work on.

The extra $45,000 probably helps bring a smile as well.

I need to play four games in the NHL, apparently. Good-bye student loans.
