UPDATE: Oklahoma City announcement Tuesday?

Sources indicate that the announcement about the Oilers new affiliation in Oklahoma City could come as early as Tuesday and early indications are that the name of the new franchise will be the Oklahoma City Oil Kings.

Watch @okcoilkings on Twitter and www.okcoilkings.com for word of the announcement.

There is no word as of yet if the Oilers will continue their affiliation with the Stockton Thunder of the ECHL.

EDIT:  The front page of the Daily Oklahoman is running a story that indicates the announcement will be made at 4 P.M. on Tuesday at the Cox Center.

Are they really going to be the Oil Kings? Doesn’t Edmonton already have a team with that name?

The Avalanche, clearly, are down with No PP.

The person that I’ve spoken with thinks it will be. That person has also given me much of the information from the OKC side that I’ve been posting.

They have six domains and six twitter accounts reserved, so it could be any of them.

I’m personally pulling for Barons. Much better name. Oil Kings reeks of the same level of effort as “Thunder.”

I’d really like to see 89ers. If that’s not going to happen, I’d settle for Oil Barons.

maybe

They want to save money on stationery and uniforms? Use the same name multiple times and they get better quantity discount pricing. :)

Which franchise?

Are the Oilers using the Road Runners franchise to create this one? Does that mean the Falcons are high and dry for now?

Yes, the Oilers will be reactivating their dormant franchise in OKC. Meaning Springfield still has an AHL franchise, but without an NHL affiliation. At this point there is one NHL team with no affiliate either (Anaheim), but rather than a forced ANA-SF marriage, one would expect the usual game of musical chairs this summer with a couple to a few teams changing affiliations.

True. There are a number of expiring affiliation agreements (5 or 6) and the rumor has the Rangers moving their affiliation to the Syracuse Crunch.

Question regarding affiliation moves

When the Rangers or any team moves their affiliation to another AHL team. What happens to the players? Meaning do the Rangers move their AHL players to the Syracuse Crunch and then the players that previously played for the Crunch go somewhere else. I am new to the whole AHL thing and I am living in OKC, so I am just curious how this whole league realignment thing works. It would be annoying if you like certain players only to see them leave because your team switched affiliations. I guess in the AHL you can never get used to watching the same players play because there are always transactions occurring from higher to lower levels. Just curious.

Anyone that is property of the NHL team, or signed by the NHL team moves with the affiliation. So anyone on two-way contracts or players that were signed by the NHL team to specifically bolster the AHL team would move on.
