I’d rather have the #1 pick, cause it gives you an option of sending said #1 pick to the minors for rehab.

No way anyone gets Malkin for one 1st round pick, even if it’s first overall. No matter how blue-chip the prospect is, a player who has yet to ever play an NHL game will not be worth one of the best players currently in the league. Multiple 1sts or Malkin goes nowhere.

Yeah. The Oilers were prepared to give up four first-rounders for Vanek. I would think the starting point of any discussion for any of these top guys still in their RFA years would be the compensation for a poached RFA in that salary bracket. The Kessel deal is a case in point, although obviously under different circumstances since he was unsigned. But he more or less got traded for his compensation.

For a guy already under contract such as Malkin, that contract itself has value. If the contreact is good enough that you see him as an outperformer – otherwise why are we trading for him? – that would make him even more expensive than the equivalent guy on the open market.

Not that there are any “equivalents” to Evgeni F. Malkin. That one’s a pipe dream.

Aside from the fact that Pittsburgh is not going to trade Malkin. Thely are going to run with the three centres and the goaltender and fill until that demonstably won’t get them to the Stanley Cup final. They’ve made it to the SC finals two years in a row with the “three dead trolls in a baggie” strategy so it would have to fail for a couple of years at least before they abandon it.

That and he is smoking some good weed if he thinks the Oilers can get Malkin for a #1, Cogliano, and Grebeshkov. The Oilers offered more for Heatley, a far inferior player to Malkin, and more for Vanek.

I largely agree that Malkin is unattainable for the package offered but in fairness to BBO a 1st OV pick alone > Penner, Cogliano, Smid.

Or I guess it’s BCB. Silly acronyms.
