It Pays to be Terrible - The Bryan Pitton Story
After three days of practices on the farm Bryan Pitton was recalled to Edmonton on February 12th for a vacation while Devan Dubnyk took his spot in Springfield to play hockey. The reasoning is simple. Devan Dubnyk is a much better goaltender and the Oilers would like him to play some games over the Olympic break. Makes sense. The upshot for Pitton is a paid vacation I could only dream of (team practices don't resume until the 24th). It's likely the earliest Pitton will be sent down is February 28th (the roster freeze - in effect until midnight on the 28th - does not include players moving up and down to the NHL if they are ineligible for waivers) when the Falcons play their last game and possibly even later. Even if he is sent down on the 28th, Pitton will have earned nearly $45,000 for the 16 days he spent on the roster, all because he's a less proficient goaltender than his would-be competition. Sometimes, it pays to be terrible.
