Around SBN: Lance Berkman Could Have Torn ACL

This shouldn't surprise anyone, but Jeff Deslauriers has cleared waivers. The Oilers would save money but lose depth if they put him on re-entry waivers (and he was claimed). It would be a nice thing to do for Jeff, but given Khabibulin's injury history and the Oilers' commitment to icing a strong team in Oklahoma, it's probably not going to happen.

Is this supposed to be news?

In theory, there is little difference between practice and theory, but in practice there is!

How soon we forget that Ethan Moreau was once picked up on waivers.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone, but somehow it surprised Jim Matheson.

I get the feeling that the headline expresses Renney’s opinion moreso than Matheson’s… which I’m pretty sure makes things much, much worse.

No reason for Oilers to badmouth the guy. Probably more reason for him to badmouth them. “We consider Jeff an NHL-quality goalie.” WTF else are they gonna say?

One thing I am unclear about or have forgotten: under what emergency conditions can JDD be recalled? If one of the Edmonton goalies goes down, can they call him up directly without having to go the re-entry route? Is there a time limit on such a move? Seems to me there is some stipulation but I don’t recall the fine print.

Not that I foresee any problems, of course, but just on the off chance that say, Nikolai Khabibulin winds up with health issues/legal issues/visa issues, how available is JDD?

I’d rather call up Gerber to be honest.

As far as the comments go, I guess it depends on how the subject came up. If this is Renney going out of his way to talk publicly about how great JDD is, then I’m not a big fan of the opinion, but if Matheson is pressing him on it, then yeah, he needs to say something flowery. All of the hand-wringing the Oilers did with these goalies has me thinking these comments are more sincere than I’d otherwise normally believe.

As for calling him up, he would normally need re-entry, but if one of the other two goalies is injured or suspended, he can be called up without clearing re-entry on an emergency basis until the emergency is over. IIRC, Clemmensen spent several months in the NHL as an emergency call-up when Brodeur went down a couple of years back.
