Watching that again…yeah, Peckham was totally gonna chase Avery down the runway before Boyle grabbed him.

And Avery looked like he was gonna come back and deal with Peckham, too.

Avery is a wild man once a linesman gets in there.

by Tyler Dellow on Nov 14, 2010 2:25 PM MST reply actions

Indeed. If there’s no linesman there, I bet he goes straight down the tunnel to the room.

I would’ve been endlessly entertained if there was a tunnel-camera shot of Peckham tackling and pounding on Avery. What might have been.

Sean Avery is the toughest man on the planet when he has 2 linesmen holding the other guy down.

There is nothing quite as satisfying as out running security after you've punched out a Flyers fan!

There was no linesman between Avery and Smid. Your argument is stupid.

by DetAvs on Nov 15, 2010 2:03 AM MST up reply actions

No, but Smid still had one glove on and was rearing back because Avery came at him without warning.

So far, you’re the only person to try to justify what Avery did, and as far as I can tell from your handle, you’re not even a Rangers fan, unlike the many Rangers fans (and players!) who feel that Avery pulled a dick move. So…yeah.

Smid dropped a glove, showing that he was both ready and willing to fight. Avery just popped him before he could do anything about it. 100% Smid’s fault.

And if Avery had come at him without warning, Smid wouldn’t have dropped his glove and stick. Sorry, your argument just doesn’t fly.

As for me trying to justify what Avery did…
1. There’s nothing to justify. It was a fight. Fights happen in the NHL. This one was just incredibly lopsided.
2. It doesn’t matter what team I’m a fan of or how many people dislike Avery. I’m indifferent to the Oilers, Avery, Smid and Peckham, so I don’t need to try to pretend that Avery did something wrong like you guys do. And a Rangers fan who comes here to hand you kids a tissue doesn’t prove anything at all. It’s a self-selecting sample.

The way people overreact and reach whenever Avery is involved with something is just plain comical.

by DetAvs on Nov 15, 2010 12:05 PM MST up reply actions

There’s a world of difference between a fight where two guys drop ‘em and square off and a fight where one guy drops his gloves and starts swinging before the other guy can react. So Smid’s gloves were half-off. So what? He was caught by surprise and couldn’t get ready. That’s still a sucker punch. Even his own teammates said that.

You’re on an island, here.

Hearing the MSG commentators compared to the Oil broadcast varies quite a bit.

Sportsnets = suckerpunch
MSG = Smid is a pussy.

Lol.

by Ineptflux on Nov 14, 2010 2:42 PM MST reply actions

That’s not the sense I got at all. The sense I got from them is actually much the same, though they didn’t come right out and say it. They said that Smid challenged him, then turned away when it looked like Avery wasn’t going to oblige, then Avery caught him by surprise.

I'm Not Sure What's More Disgusting

The cheap, pussy move by Avery, or the even pussier move by Gilbert to stand and watch the “line brawl” from a safe distance. For the love of god at least grab someone and make it look like you give a crap!

I would never, EVER expect Tom Gilbert to bring the noise in any circumstance but this is a whole new level, even for him.

In Gilbert’s defence, he was one of two surplus Oilers (Horcoff being the other odd man out). He was looking for someone, saw everyone was taken, and thought it best not to get a third-man-in. Then shit went down at the bench and he jumped in.

ALES HEMSKY WENT IN and Tom Gilbert sat out. Shawn Horcoff has one arm. Tom Gilbert is just a pussy.

Yes. Hemsky grabbed onto that noted pugilist Michael del Zotto and held on for dear life.

Honestly, I think Hemsky simply beat him to DZ. I bet they both had the same thought. “I’m gonna grab this guy because he won’t try to punch me in the face.”

Don’t get me wrong, I’d have preferred it if Hemsky charged down the tunnel, shoved past the linos while they were busy with Peckham, and smashed Avery’s face into the plexiglass until the crowd grew so silent you could actually hear Gilbert blubbering in fear from the other end of the ice.

But even fighting Michael del Zotto is better than nothing.

And then Brad Pitt asks “where did you go, psycho-boy?”

heh, it must be terrifying being a smallish skill guy when a line brawl breaks out. just hope against hope that the nearest guy is, like, Mike Ribeiro and not Brenden Morrow.

by Passive Voice on Nov 15, 2010 12:39 AM MST up reply actions

Just once, in a line brawl where the goon is out, rather than the goon grabbing the toughest opposing player I’d like to see him tune up the smallest guy he can find.

Bonus points if he disposes of the smallest guy so quickly he can move on to the next smallest guy. That’ll deter the other team all right.

Peckham deserves a suspension for that. Clean hit by Avery, solid punch on Smid (Smid shouldn’t have dropped the gloves if he didn’t want to get clocked). Bush move by Peckham.

by DetAvs on Nov 15, 2010 2:04 AM MST reply actions

Clean hit? Sure. Maybe borderline boarding, but I wouldn’t have called it myself.
Solid punch on Smid? Sure. Cheap as hell, but I wouldn’t argue its solidness. Fists tend to be that. But I’ve argued the point elsewhere.
Bush move by Peckham? Eh, he just saw his guy get sucker-punched after having a fair challenge declined. Sometimes you get a little bit testy and do dumb shit you shouldn’t. He’ll probably get suspended, and that’s fine, but I’m not gonna condemn the kid for it.
