Marty Reasoner, Wily Veteran

During their game against the Maple Leafs on the 10th, Panthers' center Marty Reasoner had just finished killing a penalty when the Panthers iced the puck.  Reasoner was visibly tired skating back up the ice for the faceoff and as he skated around teammate Rostislav Olesz, he bumped into him and said something.

Olesz, he of 42 faceoffs over his five-year career, stepped into the faceoff circle while Reasoner, a renown faceoff man,  took up a wing.  Olesz mucked around, the linesman reset, and then Olesz jumped the faceoff so early that it was jarring.  The linesman waved him from the circle and Reasoner, hunched over at the waist catching his breath, jumped into the circle.

Reasoner won the faceoff and cleared the puck from the zone.

All Marty needed was a second to catch his breath after the long penalty kill and sending Olesz into the circle to kill some time was just enough time find his wind. It's a small moment in the course of a season, but it's an example of how the veteran thinks and understands the game.  It's why teams need veterans that can think the game, win faceoffs and kill penalties.

Not all veterans are crafty, but there are good reasons why Marty Reasoner is a.) worthy of that descriptor, and b.) still in the NHL.

Definitely agree with you Derek, without any reliable veterans who is supposed to be leading and teaching the young kids, Strudwick?

The team is looking more than just bad lately, they’re looking lost out there.

Marty proves in immeasurable ways – during each game – why Tallon pursued him. A joy to watch and consummate pro.

I’ve never seen the two of them in a room together at the same time.
