Around SBN: Why We're Skeptical Of LeBron James

The Oilers have decided that the best place for Sheldon Souray is in the minors, but not in Oklahoma City. Souray is off to the Hershey Bears, and the benefits for them were laid out nicely by Neal earlier today (pretty much everything he wrote about his presence being a positive in Oklahoma applies to Hersehy too).

Now that Souray's been assigned to the AHL, it's very unlikely a trade will get done, since Souray now needs to clear re-entry waivers to play for any NHL team. The Oilers may still decide to put him on re-entry waivers after he shows that he's willing to report to Hershey (since they could terminate the contract if he refuses to report), but it seems more likely that they're just going to hold onto him and hope they'll have better luck moving him next summer. As Tyler Dellow pointed out a few days ago, it's a riskier financial play than re-entry, but it leaves open the possibility of getting something of value in return.

Free Market Souray?

What could Souray get on the free market? I wonder if that amount + his pride might be enough for him not to report to Hershey.

I expect him to report. Most teams have spent their money, and he’s coming off a serious injury, so his value on the free market will be a whole lot less than $9M over the next two years.

One-Twentieth

I wonder how much of Souray’s salary Hershey picked up?

Good point, I am not sure of how that works.

You would have thought that a deal in Europe somewhere would make sense for both parties. Presumably a Euro team might be in a position to contribute more of the salary, and Souray would be playing better competition over there.

I could be missing something, but this is seems like a pretty sharp deal from Tambo. Not as sharp as, you know, trading him for something useful or getting over the fact that he had a tantrum, but if you have to keep him out of the locker room and can’t find a partner for a trade, then having him ply his trade for another team’s affiliate makes a lot of sense. Keeps him out of the locker room in OKC, and presumably sees Hershey/Washington picking up at least part of his contract.

Yeah, I’m sure Hershey is picking up some portion of his deal, but I have no idea how much. I doubt it’s more than $500,000, but I could be wrong about that.
