It sounds like Sheldon Souray has broken his hand, so any hopes people have had about moving him should now be officially dashed. Souray didn't play for the Bears in their last game, but in the last game he did play, he was assessed a major for fighting, and it looks like that's how this went down.

He is an idiot! Doesnt learn from past mistakes. How stupid can anyone be?

Sins can be forgiven but conscience is a killer.

I actually don’t think it’s particularly stupid. People (myself included) are always talking about how you want guys who are both tough and who can play. I present to you Sheldon Souray. Toughness and fighting are a big part of his appeal; he’s got okay defense, a great shot, and he plays a strong game of intimidation. If he never fights, that last part of his game is gone, and he would be much less valuable (a slightly better version of Kurtis Foster).

Yes, but not when it hurts him. Pronger is very tough, but he rarely fights. I dont think picking up fights against AHl player would be the smartest thing to do esp coming out of a hand surgery.

When he fights and gets injured, the ‘being healthy’ part of his game is gone.

Maybe I’m just wrong about this, but it seems like guys fight an awful lot without getting injured. He knows that he’s likely stuck in the AHL for the rest of this season. He’s always played a tough game, and he knows that it’s one of the reasons another NHL team might value him. If teams are scouting him and see him back down from fight after fight, he’ll probably be stuck in the AHL for the rest of next season too.

The majority of NHL Players go through their careers not fighting. It’s not about ‘backing down’, its about not dropping the gloves WITH another player. Lots of tough players are known for ‘taking a number’ and lining the guy up later in the game. That is good hockey toughness.

Souray has now been injured in 3 of his last 5 fights. Souray fighting adds very little to his value as most of his value is in tough play and his shot.

Somehow this news doesn’t surprise me in the least.

Why would he fight after hand surgery!! Did the other guy look like Iginla?

It's a catastrophic success. (Read: GO OILERS GO)

Do you think he prefers riding buses in the AHL in Hershey or rehabbing his hand on the beach in LA, while he collects his $9 million dollars?

Is this Groundhog Day? It is, isn’t it?

I have sympathy for the guy. Being a tough defender is a big part of what makes him an attractive player. Hand injuries are a real problem in fighting, and he’s got to be prone to that right now.

Yeah, it would be smart for him to avoid fighting, but if he wants back in the big game, he’s going to keep doing it. Tough place to be.

Souray sure doesn’t seem to fight very often without getting injured. And he’s never getting back in the big game if he continues injuring the same hand. His value drops more when he’s on IR than it does if he declines to fight. Remember the whole thing about not being able to move him at the deadline because of a hand injury and subsequent infection? Didn’t seem like there were any GM’s lining up to take on his contract because he was willing to go with Iginla for a second time.
