Around SBN: FSU To Big 12 'Inevitable,' According To Report

Let’s be honest here. Taylor Hall, for all his bells and whistles, is still a teenager. We all know he’s going to make the inevitable mistake and there isn’t much we can do about it. I’ll freely take the good with the bad provided he remains on his learning curve. But like my parents always said, you have to learn from your mistakes. And tonight it became apparent that either Hall is doomed to repeat some mistakes several times, or he’s turning a deaf ear to his captain and linemate. He was flying the zone tonight exactly as was addressed before the game.

Doritogrande at Bubbling Under on Taylor Hall's early-season struggles. DG makes the suggestion to put Hall a couple of stories above the ice for a game or two.

I’d definitely consider it after the Calgary game on Saturday. Two main reasons (1) it’s Hockey Night in Canada and it probably means a lot to the kid, and (2) he may be more confident against Calgary (rightly or wrongly).

I actually don’t have as much a problem with flying the zone, but he needs to come back deeper to retrieve the puck in some cases (watch Hemsky, he’s golden at this) and he needs to learn that dumping it in on the rush is not admitting defeat…losing it in the neutral zone when you have no support and no chance to beat the defenders is pointless. He also needs to get his feet moving a bit more…he’s fast and agile, and he’s not showed it often enough. He’s tentative without the puck and trying too much with it, but he still shows flashes. Has a much better shot than I realized, but he’s not using it.

I think the amount of development that can go on in the press-box is underrated, especially for young players who are still developing physically and would probably benefit from taking a few nights off. That’s why I suggested keeping Omark with the Oilers to start the year and have H.O.P.E. rotate into the press-box on a regular basis throughout the season. They’d get a lot more rest and time to recover, and they could sit up there with a coach to learn more about the game.

I think your expectations of the learning curve is a little high. Hall has been playing this way for years. Scouts knew it when they watched him, management knew it when they drafted him.

And tonight it became apparent that either Hall is doomed to repeat some mistakes several times, or he’s turning a deaf ear to his captain and linemate

This season will be a learning curve. I dont think Hall right now knows how to change his game. It will definitely take some time for him to change his tendencies. Its his habit. So expecting him to play differently just after a game ir two is kinda crazy.

That said, a couple of games in the press box will definitely help. When a person watches a game from a spectator perspective, a lot of things become less abstract. especially positioning.

Sins can be forgiven but conscience is a killer.

“tonight it became apparent that either Hall is doomed to repeat some mistakes several times, or he’s turning a deaf ear to his captain and linemate.”

Probably best to trade him now while his value is high. An 18 year old who hasn’t learned to both listen and implement after three games is clearly an anomaly. Most 18 year olds learn overnight.

I completely agree with you. If we act now maybe we’ll be lucky enough to pick up a 33-35 year old goaltender in the prime of their career.

It's a catastrophic success. (Read: GO OILERS GO)

Can the team pay him $4M over the next, oh say, 4 years too?

That would be AWESOME.

Well I was hoping for something in the 15 year range.
