Jacques Avenges Elias/Moreau

So, apparently Ryan Wilson has a concussion as a result of this hit from Jean-Francois Jacques.  On the one hand, that's a dirty hit from Jacques and I'm pretty surprised he wasn't penalized initially with a five minute boarding penalty.  But hey, the refs make mistakes both ways.  On the other hand, you'll notice that the announcers are talking about Wilson when the hit takes place.  Apparently teams were starting to take notice of Wilson because of hits like this one on Patrik Elias (who is currently out with a concussion) or - as Oiler fans probably remember - this one on Ethan Moreau (who is currently playing like he has a concussion).  And I can't say that I disagree with the announcers.  Jacques was probably very "aware" of who he was hitting.

Scott: Agreed. Wilson did kind of turn away from the hit, but I was saying right on the GDT that JFJ should have been penalized. I also thought the guy who came in and challenged him could — by the NHL’s twisted logic — have gotten an instigator.

How sweet that we got a break from the refs in what turned out to be a 6-0 loss.

I know, what a break eh! If I recall correctly there wasn’t even fighting majors on the play which is likely why there was no instigator.

One of many problems with the instigator penalty is that it doesn’t kick in unless there’s a fight. Therefore it is actually in the interests of the guy who “got instigated” to respond in kind, upgrade the situation to a major penalty and maybe the other guy also gets 2 and 10 for his troubles. A funny way to reduce fighting.

Of course nobody ever accused the NHL of thinking things through to a logical conclusion.

Ethan Moreau (who is currently playing like he has a concussion)

You mean “who’s been playing like he has a concussion since 2007,” right?
