Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Marc Pouliot in Springfield

A few days ago Marc Pouliot was sent to Springfield on a conditioning stint.  So far he's only played one game, but hat game came in a rare Falcons win, with Pouliot picking up an assist on the game-winning goal in overtime.  This is good news for Pouliot who might be playing to stay in the NHL over the last half of the season.  With Pouliot just down on a conditioning stint and soon to return as well as Fernando Pisani back full-time, the Oilers will soon need to make a decision on who to waive if they don't make a trade, and that could mean exposing Pouliot to waivers.  Personally, I hope that doesn't happen.  Given the situation, it's very likely that Pouliot can be had at a cheap rate at the end of this season.  My inclination would be to tell him that you're only interested in a three to five year deal somewhere between 0.6M and 0.7M.  In some ways the deal works for him because it gives him an NHL wage for the next several years.  For the Oilers, it obvioulsy has pretty big upside and locks in a very outperformable contract for several years.  But that's for the offseason.  Back to the here and now the Oilers need to think about who to waive and I think the answer to that needs to be J.F. Jacques.  UNLESS!  Ethan Moreau is off to Anaheim in the next week for non-NHL assets to accomodate Pouliot's return. I think we can all agree that would be more than satisfactory.

I can’t imagine that Pouliot, or any other player, would sign as long-term as five years for under a mil.

It might be a stretch for Pouliot but I’m pretty confident that if they’d offered Ryan Potulny five years of NHL money this past off-season he would’ve jumped at the chance. Might even still do it today. There’s a big difference between AHL money and 0.6M or 0.7M for a few years.

Didn’t Bergeron have a deal like that?

oh, btw I don’t think they send Jacques out. I don’t know how they make it work but I think this org likes what he has done and won’t risk losing him.

Quinn was talking post-game today about how he created room for Gags and Cogs. He was smiling while he said it, seems like he likes the kid.

Meanwhile, Ben gave JFJ the coveted 20th star.

Yeah, but when they had 13 healthy forwards JFJ also rode the bench. I think Quinn likes some of the things that he brings for sure but he’s certainly not untouchable. I actually thought his line was decent today. I noticed Gagner playing well a lot more than I noticed either JFJ or Cogs but I thought he did okay. This whole “who to waive” discussion may end up resolving itself though. If Stone’s knee keeps him out for a while they may not have to make a decision.
