Pisani to LTIR -- UPDATED
As per Dan Tencer
This almost seals the Cogliano - Gagner - Stone line.
From commentor RossCreek below:
Jacques — Horcoff — Hemsky
O’Sullivan — Comrie — Stone
Penner — Brule — Cogliano
Moreau — Gagner — Stortini

The lines from practice according to OilersNation:
Jacques — Horcoff — Hemsky
O’Sullivan — Comrie — Stone
Penner — Brule — Cogliano
Moreau — Gagner — Stortini
Gagner will start on the 4th line as per Pat Quinn from Dustin Nielson’s twitter.
The phrase “snowball’s chance in hell” springs unbidden to mind.

Is it too early to start a preview of the lottery-level prospects in the 2010 draft?

Hemsky Injured
From Gregor’s twitter…
…Hemsky left practice early with a sore groin. Should be ready by Saturday but it is a concern!
Also, Horcoff is out a couple months with what Quinn called “a self-inflicted gunshot thing”.

Nilsson for Smithson? Do it!
O’Sullivan — Comrie — Stone
No way Stone stays in the Top 9
Too Slow
Brule?
See folks, anyone can make it;
AHL 3rd Liner to NHL 3rd liner
in 2 short weeks
[minus the summer]
Smithson or Ward. ACTUAL NHL 3rd and 4th liners. Not…Stone and Brule.

Who would have guessed at TC that we’d have new wingers on our 1st and “2nd” lines, and neither of them would be named Nilsson, Cogliano, or Gagner? Or Penner or Pisani. Or Schremp for that matter.
JFJ, Stone, Brule, Stortini … for sure we got at least one plugger per line. I don’t mind that in principle, but I’m not sure that JFJ and Stone have the chops to play first and “second” line. All in the name of balance I guess (a.k.a. a line-up full of holes).

Really don’t like the looks of that fourth line. It’s a mismatch and a mishmash. Gagner’s a possession guy, Stortini is a cycle guy, and Moreau is a do-it-yourselfer. In theory they use Gagner’s puckhandling skills to get it through the neutral zone and then go for the dump-and-thump, but that’s not Sam’s nature the way it was Brodziak’s. The line would have a much better chance of working if they swapped out Moreau for Penner.

The whole team is going to get run over.
Jacques – Horcoff – Hemsky only makes sense if you are going to use Penner with O’Sullivan to protect Comrie and make a line that can beat second minutes.
Stone and Comrie on a second minutes line is…there are words for it and they all start with ‘F’.
The new third minutes center didn’t face tough comp in the AHL and couldn’t score and he’s out there with your second best wing and some wheels that bleed chances.

I think the biggest problem is Brule. If this team were in perfect health this plan wouldn’t look nearly as poor since it’s possible (though not likely) that they would replace Brule with Pouliot and Stone with Pisani. That doesn’t look so bad to me.

The biggest problem is Brule is in the top 9, Stone and Comrie are in the top 6, Khabibulin is the goaltender and no one can kill penalties.

I really don’t think it’s fair to discuss this team as having a top 6 or 9. What they have is a top forward pairing and then three “B” lines that will be fighting for ice time with one another. I think they’re going to roll lines. It’s not conventional (anymore) and probably won’t work against teams with two good lines but it will be fun to see how it develops throughout the year.
As for specifics, if Comrie and Stone aren’t playing well they’re the fourth line and get to sit. It’s only a problem if we have two lines getting bombed at once (which is a distinct possibility). I don’t like Brule because I don’t think he’s a competent NHLer but if we had Pouliot (or Brodziak or even Nilsson) skating in his place then the plan wouldn’t look as bad.
As for the PK, it’s a problem but hopefully Stone can hold the fort until help comes back in the form of Pisani, Pouliot or an unlikely trade. Khabibulin will probably be alright in goal this year as far as performance. It’s the times we see someone else in goal that I worry about.

The issue is much more that Stortini is garbage, Moreau is garbage, and Gagner is young garbage.
Not that I’m pessimistic or anything.

Hey, careful with the anti-Zorg comments! Pessimism is one thing, but that’s asking for trouble.
