TSN is also reporting this. If both Schremp and Reddox get claimed on the way down, I think that seriously weakens the Falcons lineup this year. They would probably actually be worse at forward. I’m surprised they didn’t waive MacIntyre instead.

Give it time.

And the good news is that Minard and Potulny made it down. Minard’s going to be a big help, I think.

I have to admit that I’d be a little annoyed if they lose Reddox.

Me too. He’s a useful guy to have around.

by Bruce McCurdy on Sep 29, 2009 11:39 AM MDT up reply actions

Potulny was there last year and Minard would need to replace the contributions of Schremp and Reddox for the team to break even. I certainly expect them to be better this year, especially on D where they hopefully won’t have so many injuries (I’m looking at you Theo) but the forward improvement will need to mostly come from within the organization.

Goodnight, Toby Petersen, and a flight of angels sing thee to thy rightful obscurity.

Also, something far more important: the Flames have waived Jamie Lundmark.

Claim him now.

by Benjamin Massey on Sep 29, 2009 11:10 AM MDT reply actions

Isn’t Lundmark the same player as Robert Nilsson? I haven’t actually paid much attention to him, but from what I remember seeing I don’t think he would be an upgrade over anyone we currently have on the roster. And if we’re waiving players to try to (a) get down to the maximum # of roster players, and (b) get under the salary cap, would the Oilers really want to add players at this point? I’m not sure about that.

by jonnybluejay on Sep 29, 2009 11:18 AM MDT up reply actions

Bobby Nilsson never played for the St. Albert Saints.

Lundmark is entirely a sentimental favourite. Entirely. Claim him now.

by Benjamin Massey on Sep 29, 2009 11:36 AM MDT up reply actions

Weren’t Lundmark and Comrie linemates who terrorized the AJHL?

Looked it up:

1997-98 (inc. playoffs)

Comrie: 76 GP, 84-102-186, 185 PiM
Lundmark: 76 GP, 46-76-122, 176 PiM

Long time ago, but the duo generated lots of headlines. Despite the stats, Lundmark was the prize draft pick … hindsight shows the scouts should have just believed the stats.

Scott and I discussed this in his Adam Hall post below; the Oilers should actually claim the lesser-known Colin Stuart.

See, I really don’t think they should. What do you see in Colin Stuart Jonathan? Very little NHL experience, very little offence in the AHL. Do you really think he’s a better option than Reddox?

by Scott Reynolds on Sep 29, 2009 11:37 AM MDT up reply actions

Fun stat

Relative Corsi ratings of Reddox and Stuart:

Stuart: 0.0
Reddox: -20.6

In other words, yes. Not only did Stuart perform better against better players, but he’s also bigger and more physical.

This just doesn’t seem like a big deal to me. Stuart only played in 33 NHL games and his real Corsi is still very bad (Atlanta was poor). Reddox definitely struggled last year, but he also didn’t see a ton of ice and at least has age and AHL results on his side. With Stuart, not so much. He has no offence to speak of what with his best AHL season being 29 points in 67 games and he’s going to be 27 this year. What it comes down to for me is if I had to pick one guy to keep and one guy to waive, I’d be keeping Reddox.

Just to clarify:

Perhaps not in five years. But today, they aren’t close.

The lines from practice according to OilersNation:

Jacques — Horcoff — Hemsky
O’Sullivan — Comrie — Stone
Penner — Brule — Cogliano
Moreau — Gagner — Stortini

Gagner will start on the 4th line as per Pat Quinn from Dustin Nielson’s twitter.

by RossCreek on Sep 29, 2009 12:48 PM MDT reply actions

This team is in so much trouble if Comrie and Stone are playing second minutes.

They are going to get bombed.

by Derek Zona on Sep 29, 2009 12:51 PM MDT up reply actions

I’d suggest they’re goin with a 1-2A-2B-4 setup and trying to balance the lines out. Msessage delivered to Gagner.

by RossCreek on Sep 29, 2009 12:56 PM MDT up reply actions

They’re not matching lines. I think he may well see 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4 and repeat at the beginning of the game. Whichever line is struggling the most gets sat down, so some nights you see 1-2-3-4-1-2-4 and others 1-2-3-4-1-3-4 and so on. It may leave us exposed at times, but it could also create matchup difficulties for the opponents if they run their big guns out against a non Horc-Hemmer line.

by Scott Reynolds on Sep 29, 2009 1:33 PM MDT up reply actions

That’s pollyanna stuff. This team is going to get smoked at evens.

by Derek Zona on Sep 29, 2009 1:40 PM MDT up reply actions

Don’t forget that they’re going to get smoked shorthanded too. Let’s give the penalty killers their due.

by Benjamin Massey on Sep 29, 2009 1:42 PM MDT up reply actions

Such pessimism

The powerplay is going to be killer, especially when J-F Jacques emerges as the next Tim Kerr. Our all-world defence will make the forward group look borderline competent. Besides, our goalie won the Stanley Cup

by Bruce McCurdy on Sep 29, 2009 2:01 PM MDT up reply actions

Not sure what happened there

It was supposed to say, “our goalie won the Stanley Cup !!!!1 1!! 1!”

by Bruce McCurdy on Sep 29, 2009 2:04 PM MDT up reply actions

On the bright side, at least on 5-on-3s Horcoff is there?

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Sep 29, 2009 2:20 PM MDT up reply actions

What if he’s one of the guys in the box?? Boy, this could be a long season. We’ll need a 50% PP this year in order to get the games to OT, where hopefully we can out-play the opposition 4 on 4.

by jonnybluejay on Sep 29, 2009 2:50 PM MDT up reply actions

I actually think it will work out alright against teams that don’t have much depth. Any of those four lines should be able to outplay most of the dregs others can offer. In addition any of those four lines will probably be outplayed when out against the other team’s best (with the possible exception of Horc-Hemmer). We’ll see how it goes I guess. I anticipate quite a bit of scoring for both teams.
