Oilers Lines vs. Vancouver

Jacques - Horcoff - Hemsky
Penner - O'Sullivan - Comrie
Cogliano - Gagner - Reddox
MacIntyre - Brule - Stortini

Souray - Staios
Smid - Gilbert
Strudwick - Visnovsky

Khabibulin

"We want some size in our lineup."

--Pat Quinn, on making personnel decisions.

Jacques is guaranteed a top nine spot to start the regular season, Kip Brennan is likely the new knuckles, and Stone is all but guaranteed to make the team.  The Oilers have hit the reset button on the learning curve.

Star-divide

"He hasn't shown enough in this camp to prove that he's ready to play at this level.  I don't think that's criticism. I think it's an assessment of fact."

--Mike Gillis, on Cody Hodgson

Vancouver's Lineup tonight:

The forwards:

Burrows - Sedin - Sedin
Raymond - Wellwood - Bernier
Glass - Hodgson - Shirokov
Hordichuk - Rypien - Pope

The defensive pairings

Mitchell - Salo
Bieksa - Ehrhoff
O'Brien - Rome

In goal

Schneider

I expect this to be an affair full of fisticuffs.

Don’t get the push of MacIntyre to play with Gagner and Cogliano. I can’t see that working at all. Menawhile Stortini lines up with the grunts again as he has done all preseason.

I’m not saying Storts isn’t a grunt himself, but if JFJ and Stone can get extended auditions with skill players, why not the same thing for Zorg? Especially over SMac? I just don’t get it.

It’s a little confusing.

Then again, it’s the Oilers.

I think that someone will be swapping with MacIntyre during (or before) the game. It might be Stortini, but I could also see Reddox or especially Brule move up as the game goes on.

Seems weird to let him run a whole practice with them then.

I suppose that is a bit odd. Still, there is surely an understanding of his role with the coaching staff. He may play all of his EV time on that line but I would think he’ll also receive much less TOI than either of the other guys on his line.

Yep..looks like this could be a rough game indeed! Can one of your guys run over Hodgson and get this whole CoHo charade over with? Yeah I know, I’m evil.

Only if the Canucks run over Brule…

That’s mean.

Can the Canucks run over a few people in the management box?

Haha, get those guys on the ice for a ceremonial puck drop and we’ll see what happens!

by Sean Zandberg on Sep 27, 2009 5:29 PM MDT up reply actions

Oh and with Brule…I can see your frustration. I thought he’d thrive in Edmonton. With Hodgson, he’s still young and i’m just sick of all the hype and failure. Enough is enough

by Sean Zandberg on Sep 27, 2009 5:31 PM MDT up reply actions

On a scale of one to Schremp, how obnoxious and overblown is the hype, anyway? I’d gotten the impression that Hodgson had a clue without the puck and/or at even strength; is that accurate?

Brennan?
Kip Brennan is likely the new knuckles

Not sure I connect the dots the same way. Add Stone and JFJ to Stortini in the regular mix and that’s more nastiness than we had last year when Stortini, MacIntyre and JFJ played just 81 GP combined. I expect to see at least 2 of those guys in the line-up each night.

I’d rather have big guys who hit and can play 10-12 minutes than a hired fist that has to be hidden on the bench.

by Bruce McCurdy on Sep 27, 2009 5:10 PM MDT reply actions

They are going to take one of them, and Brennan has more hockey ability.

Strudwick?

15th forward, leaves room for one more F with actual skill

Power play

Oh look, J.F. Jacques is on the power play.

Wha?

Cogliano – Gagner – Reddox

That’s a tiny line.

And a line that couldn’t get into a senior prom, never mind a liquor store.

Brennan won't make the team

As Gregor was nice enough to point out to me the other day, he has an AHL-only contract.
