Sloppy Seconds - Free Agency Leftovers

After the initial surge of free agency signings, I noticed last night that there was a large amount of talent still available on the list, so I cobbled together a team from the remainings UFAs.  I believe this team would be in the playoffs, though light on defense and eliminated in the first round.  Here are the sloppy seconds all stars:

Tanguay - Koivu - Kovalev
Moen - Malhotra - Niedermayer
Kotalik - Lang - Sykora
Veilleux - Moore - Grier

Morris - Boynton
Foster - Beauchemin
Mara - Seidenberg

Biron
Legace

The leftovers are strong on the power play, in the faceoff circle, in the net and on the and penalty kill. The top two lines would hold their own at even strength and the fourth line would likely be a dominant fourth line.  Low cost alternative signings include Betts, Yelle, Labarbera, Perrin, Pyatt, McKee, Tollefson, Boullion.  I'll track the signings and update the post later in the summer to see if leftovers playoff team fit under the cap.

I like the forwards, but the more I look at it, I wonder about the dmen on this fictional squad. The performance per dollar on the blueline would be pretty unimpressive I think. However, the cap space is running out so maybe their final bill gets driven down if and when you revisit the cost of this group at the end of the offseason.

Dmen

The fictional team could always make an offer sheet on Grebeshkov, or trade a 3C for Gilbert :)

I voted No for basically the same reason. The defense just isn’t good enough.

Defense

True, however, this team has some strength with two-way forwards, is stout down the middle and will be top 10 in both sides of special teams. Throw in above average goaltending and I think this team makes the playoffs in both conferences.

Cap hit?

It’ll be interesting to see once these 20 guys sign what their total cap hit will be. Is their collective value in the realm of a real team?

Mike Grier is still available? If only we could off-load Moreau’s 2M contract and put that money towards Mike and maybe Dom Moore…

Back to dreamland I go.

i think this lineup is one shut down D-man away from making the playoffs
