I’ve been a big believer in the surprisingly heretical notion that every player on an NHL roster be capable of playing hockey at the NHL level, regardless of physical attributes or intangibles. If the goon can’t hack eight minutes a night against other fourth liners, he doesn’t belong in the NHL, full stop.

That’s about where Im at (or have been at for awhile). Funny thing is, most fans and GMs wouldn’t back a similarly one dimensional player in other categories. For example, an extremely fast skater who couldn’t pass, score or prevent goals. Or a guy with a really hard shot who couldn’t do anything else. But goons are another matter for some reason – even though their ostensible “skill” has so little to do with actually playing the game.
