Daryl Katz' Tunnel Vision

Two weeks ago I wrote that Daryl Katz' tunnel vision was hampering this team. Either I'm psychic, or it's just more of the same Captain Ahab behavior from the Oilers well-heeled owner. Will this cost the Oilers a chance at the pieces they desperately need again this year?

Hah…give him some time. He is a fan right now. It will take him a couple of years to act as an owner

Understand your opinion on tunnel vision, but I think Heatley did fit the top 6 forwards needs best: sniper and who needs defensive responsibility when you have Horcoff to play with him.

His point is not about chasing heatley. It is about the manner in which it was done. Once Heater denied, ideally we should have gone after other FAs rather praying for Heater to be back.

Rinse...Lather...Repeat

I don’t understand how a management group can avoid creating a contingency plan every time they do something. Hossa, Jagr, and now Heatley.

Havlat

Havlat would have been good to pursue. I don’t see Hossa or Gaborik signing here. I don’t see the Oilers wanting Camalleri. The rest aren’t in the same class as Heatley…

Tanguay

For the price and cost in assets, Tanguay is better.

Tanguay

He’d be decent but he is a soft playmaker who disappears in the playoffs. He could probably be had for 4 million and would be a definite upgrade on Nilsson though. I’m not sure Tanguay would sign in Edmonton after disliking Calgary but I think that had more to do with coaching that the environment. I’d be looking at other options myself but wouldnt be upset if Tanguay ended up here either.

If Tanguay disappears in the playoffs he’s a perfect fit for the Oilers (he said bitterly)

Playoffs

If he helped them INTO the playoffs in the first place, I don’t think that he could be blamed for disappearing. His back would likely be sore.

I remember back when Colorado won the Cup in ‘01, you barely even knew he was there. He only had…wait what? 21 points? Third on the team behind Sakic and Hejduk? That can’t be right, that guy’s garbage in the playoffs.

As for the rest, throw out his rookie year and 0.69 PPG, mostly from the pre-lockout days, is pretty respectable, given a lot of one-and-dones. I don’t think any of Tanguay’s teams have failed on his account.

If we’re gonna hand pick stats, can we throw out his year playing with Forsberg? That was all Forsberg anyways ;)

I still think he is soft and the Oilers dont need another playmaker as much as other needs (ie 3rd line centre). With a limited budget I’d rather see the money spent elsewhere.

by puckdonkey on Jul 2, 2009 4:11 PM MDT up reply actions

I threw out his rookie year because I’m willing to bet he played eight minutes a night, which is hardly worthy of comparing to the rest of his career, when he’s been a top-line winger. I agree that I’d rather grab a 3C and aim for sixth, but if you want to blow your wad, you could do worse.
