Sutter will not be joining brother Darryl in Calgary. The Flames have been looking for a new coach since Mike Keenan was fired, and speculation was rampant that Brent would take the opportunity to join forces with Darryl, the Flames’ general manager. Instead, Darryl will likely handle both duties.
Matheson goes on to say that Jacques Lemaire, who turned down a job in Tampa Bay, is one possibility for the Devils job (although I think John MacLean or Peter Laviolette aren't bad bets either), but that's really not the point of this.
The point of this is that Darryl Sutter, quite possibly the most arrogant G.M. in the league, is finally going to have to step back behind the bench of the team he constructed. Mike Keenan was fired, but I think he did a good job of getting the most out of the Flames, and I'm not alone in thinking that. Sutter thinks he can do better; now we'll all get to see if that's true.
Two chief connections to the situation of the Edmonton Oilers occured to me along the way, they are:
- It's too bad Kevin Lowe didn't have to coach the team he assembled
- Was Steve Tambellini perhaps a little too quick to name Pat Quinn head coach?
