Around SBN: This Should Encourage Juan Mata

Guy Flaming does up an incredible piece on Ryan Ellis, the guy I've been touting for the Oilers at 10th overall. There's a lot there, and I've got to think about it a bit, but I strongly suggest that anyone interested reading it.

I hope all these doubts cause Ellis to drop to the Flames. Not that Sutter and crew would necessarily pick him, but…

A kid who in his 16 year old rookie season scored 15 goals and 63 points in the OHL and then put up Bobby Orr comparable numbers in his sophomore year. If he was 3 inches taller and 20 pounds heavier, he could play the exact same game and he’d be talked about with Hedman and Tavares.

Where he ends up – and how his career fares afterward – is going to be fascinating case study.

I agree

And I’m still a fan. But Flaming makes a good counter-argument.

It's only my opinion, but it's right.

Ehhh…

I wasn’t as swayed. Ignoring results because the packaging isn’t quite right is a classic scouting error in just about every sport. His best argument was the comparison to Russel and that team effects may be inflating Ellis’ totals into eye-popping territory (although I’d say Ellis is one of the prime reasons the Spitfires were so dominant rather than the other way around) – but the stuff about him being not big enough makes me shrug.
