Amazing. I agree with most of the analysis found at the link above; this is a great move for the Rangers, and a horrible one for the Canadiens. Montreal manages to dump cap space and great prospects for an overpaid forward, while New York does the reverse.

I hope Dany Heatley enjoys Broadway. And apparently Glen Sather isn't quite as senile as his time with the Rangers has made him seem.

What about advanced stats

Gomez — toughest qual comp on his team and excellent Corsi.

He’s their Horcoff-plus.

Not such a terrible player (not such a great contract, I admit).

Gomez is a quality player

Just overpaid.

The problem is that Higgins is a good value contract, McDonaugh is a heck of a prospect, and the other guys Montreal sent over are better than the stuff they got back.

New York shouldn’t have been able to dump that salary without taking at least 4MM back.

Gomez

Is worth just a bit less that Horcoff.

If SB Support would get my archives over here, I could link here. If a team has cap space to burn, it’s not a bad pickup. However, throwing in a top-notch d prospect is…not good.

I like the Rangers deal, too

Sather did get himself some breathing room, the crafty old fox, though Higgins is in for a raise this summer, even if he didn’t have a great year.

I never saw Gomez play much, but his numbers do hint at a very good player, so MTL isn’t going be killed by this deal, at least not in the next few years, when Gomez should be playing at near peak levels.

Gomez’s offensive production hasn’t been great since the lockout though, and was especially bad this past season. The other thing is that the Rangers were very good territorially, so his Corsi might take a hit with an inferior team (he started roughly 100 more faceoffs in the offensive than defensive zone, a luxury he may not have in Montreal).

If Gomez plays the way he can, then it’s almost okay, but…Jesus, the team taking on the salary isn’t supposed to give up the better prospects, too.
