Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Fun Comparables For Cameron Abney

All of the numbers here come from the draft years of these players:

  • Georges Laraque: 62GP - 19G - 22A - 41PTS (31st overall)
  • Zack Stortini: 62GP - 13G - 16A - 29PTS (94th overall)
  • Derek Boogaard: 61GP - 1G - 8A - 9PTS (202nd overall)
  • Scott Parker: 64GP - 3G - 4A - 7PTS (63rd overall)
  • Cameron Abney: 48GP - 1G - 3A - 4PTS (82nd overall)

I think we have a pretty good idea which end of the scale Abney's going to end up at.

Eric Godard as an 18/19 year old:

2-5-7 in 66 games.

Of course, Godard was never drafted.

There's a bunch like that

Jody Shelley didn’t play major junior, Steve MacIntyre put up no points in limited duty; but these guys all went undrafted. Boogaard was a late pick.

Guys like Parker and Abney are the exceptions (Parker later re-entered the draft and was taken in the first round by Colorado) and probably not good ones, though I’d love to see a guy with less than ten points who ever went on to be more than a 4th-liner.

That should say “Jody Shelley didn’t play Major Junior at 18”

Signing goons for league minimum doesn’t even make sense to me in the current NHL. But drafting them in the 3rd round….?

I’ve been railing against this to anyone who will listen for days, including in the thread below.

Stu MacGregor was saying that Bob Brown believes the kid can be a tough enforcer who can also play. He apparently was playing more in the second half of the season when Everett struggled with injuries at forward, and has upside in a checking role.

Still, the pick makes no sense. If you are interested in the player of this type keep an eye on him and use a pick when he’s 18/19 if he’s projecting well. And even then it’s arguably a waste of an asset if he goes undrafted and is available as a minor league pro later on.

BTW I’m a fan of the lot of you becoming website roommates. Less stops for me on the ridiculous Oilers blog-roll.

I’ll trust the Oilers scouts a long ways, but a forward with four points shouldn’t get picked in the top-100. Period. I can’t think of a single example of a player with such negligible offense having much of a career.

I think from what we’ve seen from Tambelli over the last season its fair to say that he actively values the role of a goon so I don’t think we should be all that surprise that the Oilers went out and found him a promising pugalist. Last season he went out and acquired MacIntyre and another thug as I recall if only briefly.

Jesse Boulerice. Funny, I didn’t like that move, either.
