NHL Draft 2009: And That's One Vote For Zach Kassian

Kassian_medium

From Ryan Kennedy's mock draft:

10. Edmonton – Zack Kassian, RW, Peterborough, OHL. Oilers want more grit and size; Kassian has both in spades.

Kassian's well back of the best players in this draft offensively; I don't doubt that he'll be an NHL'er, but I do wonder if he'll be able to crack the top-six on a consistent basis.  Besides, he's almost certainly a year or more away from being an NHL player, and probably three to five years away from having a serious impact; there's very little sense in addressing today's needs 3+ years from now.

Isbister redux

The kid has no wheels and by all accounts is meathead.

From descriptions, he kinda sounds like Chris Simon to me.

Simon

And there’s a dude that wouldn’t be worth much in this NHL

Why not? Chris Dingman was a first round pick too.

Zach Kassian compares favourably to Brad Isbister. Isbister never reached his potential… but Kassian might.

Perhaps, but Isbister was a 3rd round pick. Kassian is looking to go inside the top 20.

1995-96 Portland Winter Hawks WHL 71 45 44 89 184
2008-09 Peterborough Petes OHL 61 24 39 63 136

Similar players, similar stats, though I can’t say anything in terms of QUALCOMP or TOI. I think Brad Isbister is a very good comparison for Zack Kassian, coming out of junior.

I still think it’s a legitimate question to ask whether Kassian is going to be Shane Doan… or Brad Isbister.
