There are a lot of positives. It's the history of the game. This is the same game today as it was when Gordie Howe and Rocket Richard played. It's an integral part of the game. It creates space and room for your skilled guys by making them feel more comfortable on the ice. It changes the momentum of the game when your team needs it. It shows willingness to compete in hand-to-hand combat where you're willing to sacrifice yourself for your team. It creates that chemistry and bond with guys on the team. It energizes not only everybody on the team, but the fans, as well.
Zack Stortini, talking about the role fighting plays in the NHL game. Stortini recently helped EA Sports with the physical side of NHL '10.

I can’t really get into hockey video games for some reason. The last time I was really deep into one was the lockout year, with NHL 2K5; before that, it was NHL PowerPlay ’96 on the PC, so…yeah. I guess I just prefer the real thing, and leave my consoles for other stuff.
That being said, it sounds like they’re making a lot of additions, both in terms of the grit and in terms of skill (stuff like being able to shoot from your knees, something we’ve seen a lot more of from the youngsters in the last few years).
SNN Sports - A theoretical Oilers blog (i.e. theoretically, I write stuff there)
I'm not a gamer either...
The last version I played was NHL 2002. Still, it does sound pretty cool and it’s a nice bit on Stortini.
It's only my opinion, but it's right.
