Oilers defenceman Tom Gilbert agreed to play for the United States at the world hockey championship in Switzerland, but backed out, literally.
He hurt his back before last fall's training camp and battled through this season, not missing a game, but Oilers doctor David Reid asked Gilbert after the season ended if he'd had a day when his back wasn't sore, and Gilbert said no.
The Oilers thought it best that Gilbert pass on the worlds.
