Terrific news
Might as well have one or two of these Oiler drafts here in town where we can see ’em. For sure the Oil Kings needed an injection of gumption which Abney should provide.
I know the ‘sphere was down on this guy from the moment his pick was announced, but I for one am prepared to give him a chance. I’ll keep a close eye on him anytime I get out to a Oil Kings game (which is rarely).

You’re quite sympathetic and optimistic lately.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: I’d much rather they’d signed him as a free agent than wasted a draft pick on him. His established skillset is too readily duplicated for it to be worthwhile.

Even though my belief system has been badly shaken of late, I am prepared to give the Oilers procurement dept. the benefit of the doubt. They’ve made a lot of interesting picks the last few years; the fact that the Abney pick appears so completely from left field just makes him a little more interesting in one sense. Same goes for Kyle Bigos.
Besides, the Oilers already have about 36 guys with the established skillset “smurf”. A little balance isn’t a bad idea.

Doogie’s right though. Edmonton could have signed him and a dozen over guys like him the next day.
