I want to reiterate that Calgary keeping the "Flames" moniker after the move from Atlanta makes as much sense as Utah keeping the "Jazz" moniker after the move from New Orleans. Suggested alternative nicknames?

Calgary's system is not doing well.

I don’t think that “Calgary Flames” is quite the non sequitur that Utah Jazz is, but I can think of a few improvements. How about the Calgary Uglys? The Calgary Cheapshotters?

How about the Calgary Uglys? The Calgary Cheapshotters?

I was thinking more along the lines of the Calgary Graylings, Calgary Rockies, Calgary Eagles, Calgary Lynx, Calgary Peigan, Calgary Pronghorn, Calgary Red Foxes, Calgary Fishers…

Calgary Cowboys, Calgary Broncos, Calgary Stampeders, and Calgary Centennials had already been used at various points. Alberta Oilers, of course, had been claimed up north several years earlier, after a failed attempt to play home games in both cities the club’s first year.

So all of my suggestions are still available?

Looks like it. Unless the Calgary Lynx were a soccer team at some point, but I think that was Ottawa.

@ Bruce

In honor of the WJC going on right now I would love to see your take on the “Punch Up in Piestiany”

Gare Joyce wrote a whole book on that. Have you read it? (I haven’t, yet.)

Mine would be more like a paragraph or maybe a page. I do remember it fairly well, especially Don Cherry and Brian Williams almost coming to blows in the studio.

Anyway, I’ll think about it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I’ll recommend the book. It’s called When the Lights Went Out, and it definitely makes you stop and think, both about what Hockey Canada got wrong that year (this was the year of the Four Broncos crash, and the team was ill-equipped to deal with it), and about the mentality that made excessive brawling acceptable, and even common, in junior.
