Edmonton's Kevin Lowe is at tonight's game, Oilers have been at all four games on this road trip

Erik Erlendsson, of the Tampa Tribune

This is one that has something to it, unless Lowe has coincidentally decided he wants to see the arena plans of all of Tampa's opponents on this road trip. These kind of set-ups frighten me because I don't really see much from Tampa that I'd be willing to take on, and I can't imagine who Tampa would want in return. Do any of our esteemed readership have an idea here?

Olympic scouting.

Lecavalier, St. Louis, Stamkos.

For four straight games on a roadie?

Raw Charge reports that Tampa has only been carrying 12 forwards, and that they have 9 dmen, 1 on leave, so the deal is not likely for a forward.

If the deal is for a dman, that means that Souray is worse than we thought, but given the lack of forward depth already, and given the injuries to Horcoff and Hemsky, I can’t believe that they’re dealing for a forward.

Hmmm

A game or two but not four for Olympic scouting.

What’s the cap situation in Tampa? More importantly what is the financial situation?

The Oilers’ cap situation is shit too but maybe with Stamkos’ emergence Tampa is looking to move a big money guy for a handful of kids?

Maybe Vinny or St. Louis?

That was my thought as well, Jake. Upon a second look, these are both teams short on real forwards and long defense.

Malone for a bunch of kids centered around Cogliano?

Yeah I could see that. They’d have to even up the contracts so the Oilers can make it work under the cap, unless they cut a couple of guys loose. iirc Lowe had a big boner for Malone so that one makes sense.

Have to be Cogs and prospects I think, and primo ones at that, Tampa needs cheap players to make it work, imo. They have no money.

Or primo prospect + expiring contracts

I thought Malone was on Stamkos’s line. Would they really want to mess with something that’s actually working for them?

If they are having financial issues then they might need to dump salary Doogie. I know last season there was a lot of talk that they had issues meeting payroll. Their finances are a mess. Catch 22 really. Can’t pay the guys who make the team competitive, move those guys and your fanbase dwindles.

A Malone for Cogliano + Pisani deal is interesting for both sides.

I can’t see the Oilers thinking it’s a good idea to commit that much more salary for 2010-11 unless they’re sure the cap is going up by a non-trivial amount.

by Scott Reynolds on Nov 8, 2009 5:22 PM MST up reply actions

I find your take rational and logical. Is that the take you should have?

Editor of The Copper & Blue, and leader of The Cult Of Hartikainen.

by Derek Zona on Nov 8, 2009 5:45 PM MST up reply actions

exactly. Scott, when hunting, say, a yellow bellied seersucker, one must think like a yellow bellied seersucker

so when putting together fantasy trades for the Oilers one must think like Kevin Lowe

Goaltending? Who needs goaltending?

Holy Cow We Have A Lot Of Defencemen!

We would have signed Smytty but we had no idea that the cap would go up!

Etc etc.

by Pat Mc on Nov 8, 2009 7:10 PM MST up reply actions

It took me a very long time to come to this realization, but that’s exactly what I’m talking about.

Malone for Cogliano and Pisani and a throw in to make it work on the cap. That’s how you work it. And they’ll still come into next season with Moreau and Nilsson’s $4 million on the bottom of the roster.

This is true, and it’s not like they can just pawn off Lecavalier, now that he has the lifetime deal and NMC. Also, I wonder how much of the payroll problem was on Len Barrie’s end. He was clearly the minority partner, in terms of actual liquidity, as proven by the problems he had meeting the cash call to stay in ownership. Oren Koules, on the other hand, can just make another Saw movie.

They’ve found a team to take Swedish Bob off our hands?
Wouldn’t say no to Steve Downie coming back the other way.

by Oiler Mag on Nov 7, 2009 6:12 PM MST reply actions

I think this is very likely. The Lightning are looking for another top six forward. It would be a great situation for Nilsson too since he’d probably get to play with Lecavalier. It could sure make the Oilers look the fool. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a Nilsson – Halpern swap. It addresses an area of need for both clubs and the cap hit of both guys is equal.

by Scott Reynolds on Nov 8, 2009 1:51 AM MST up reply actions

This makes sense, I didn’t even think of Halpern. On paper he’s what the Oilers need (RH two way centre) but his numbers have been awful since his knee injury, am I right Derek?

by Pat Mc on Nov 8, 2009 6:24 AM MST up reply actions

I imagine this is why the Lightning would part with him for Nilsson. It’s not as though Robert is setting the league on fire.

He’s not been the same player since. And he’s not climbing mountains either.

Olympic scouting, guys. Yes, four games. What the hell is Kevin Lowe doing around Edmonton these days anyway – he’s Dennis’s old “Vice-President of Remembering the Eighties” personified.

Keep in mind that he doesn’t actually say that Lowe’s been at all four games, just that the Oilers have. Leads me to believe that it’s not a Hockey Canada thing.

by Scott Reynolds on Nov 8, 2009 1:44 AM MST up reply actions

Correct me if I’m wrong – and I am never wrong – but weren’t Oiler scouts used to check out 2006 Olympic candidates as well?

by Benjamin Massey on Nov 8, 2009 10:04 AM MST up reply actions

I have no idea but I hope that’s not the case.

by Scott Reynolds on Nov 8, 2009 10:46 AM MST up reply actions

The Oiler scots should be doing nothing but their own damned jobs – they’re lacking a bit, if you haven’t noticed.

6-5 defenseman Kurtis Foster? He’s cheap and could fill in while our guys are hurt. Halpern makes a lot of sense too. Both are on expiring contracts this year
