Rob Schremp Update

The kid with all of the moves hasn't exploded onto the scoresheets yet.  Maybe those four coaches that took a pass on Schremp knew something all along.

I think he's destined for Europe sometime soon.

On the other hand, Dustin Penner.

Four coaches didn’t pass on Penner, only one did.

Penner played 82 games as a rookie for Carlyle and scored 29 goals. Carlyle may have grumbled about him, but he still got loads of production out of him.

Randy Carlyle’s Dustin Penner:

82 GP: 29-16-45

Craig MacTavish’s Dustin Penner:

82 GP: 23-24-47

All kinds of different things contextually some of which suggest MacT believed in Penner more than Carlyle did. Both complained about Penner. Both benched Penner at times. Even last year Penner had more ice time with MacT than he ever got from Carlyle. If you want to say MacT passed on him I can’t see any reason to say Carlyle didn’t pass on him too.

As for last year, Penner had tons of opportunity his first year here with MacT and he didn’t do as much with it as they had hoped, especially at EV. MacT’s disappointment was thus somewhat justified, though he did fail to see how Penner improved year over year and ended up judging him on some pretty wonky criteria. Looking back, I’m sure he regrets that but I also suspect he wishes Penner would have come as a fully formed player his first year with the Oilers. Just last night MacT said he’ll take some of the blame for what went on with Penner which suggests to me that he believes Penner too should take some. That seems about right to me.

I seem to remember something going around the ‘sphere at the time that people were suggesting that Penner was an Oiler because MacTavish wanted him. I can’t remember where that came from, but I know it was said by people of some repute. If so, it’s interesting that MacT died on Penner Hill.

Also, how fitting that Rob Schremp, who derailed so many threads, is now a mere footnote in this discussion.

I have nothing to add

It’s already been said before, and many times more than necessary.
