Oilers versus Red Wings: Sick Guys vs. Old Guys

Winging It In Motown's Game Day Thread
It's almost like bragging. Wings narrowly avoid their worst start since 1993. They're 4-4-2!
The world is changing when there are only five Wings above water at evens.
Pavel Datsyuk is dinged up. That guy is always dinged up. Doesn't prevent him from playing like nails. I wonder if he could play through the Oiler flu?
Reaction to the Wings slow start. This is what happens when you throw Chris Chelios overboard.
The Wings problem? Goaltending, Defense, Offense, Injuries, Coaching. This guy could easily write an Oiler blog.
Frolov to the Wings? Nah, Ville Lean-o is just as good.

Aaaah I like your last choice sample size. However after all is said and done and the sample size increases, the problem will remain the goaltending. Osgood is too old now

g) Stanley Cup hangover
These guys have played into June two years running, and made the conference finals the year before that. Long playoff runs, short off-seasons. That’s tough enough when you do it once in a row. I fully expected them to have a tough start to the season, and it may take them a while to pull out of it.

As with the Islanders, they may never pull out of it…

Not to mention ...
… with the loss of Hossa, Hudler, Samuelsson to free agency and the long term injury to Franzen the Wings are down 116 goals from ’08-09. Replacement guys will be doing well to recover half of those goals.
Also, the following six-pack of key veterans are all 36 and above:
Osgood
Lidstrom – Rafalski
Holmstrom – Draper – Maltby

Given that Draper has been a healthy scratch already this year, I’m not sure he and Maltby are exactly “key.”
At least in my viewings against the Avalanche the Wings have looked great except for the guy manning the pipes. I think Chicago wins that division this year but the Wings are far from done.

Well, that's kind of the point
Those guys are getting older, so their play and/or their role must diminish. Let’s rephrase: “Key veterans from the dynasty years”. Draper and Maltby have been key figures for the Wings for years — checkers, penalty killers, irritants, proven winners — and I have yet to be convinced that the likes of Patrick Eaves and Darren Helm will prove to be adequate replacements even down the road, let alone right now. One way or the other, the Wings “third” line is gradually weakening. So is their first pairing on the blue, which ultimately will prove even more critical; my point was their whole line-up is rife with guys with a lot of wear on their tires.
