If Chorney continues to show he's ready to play, does it make sense to trade Gilbert? Yes, I've heard the rumours about a swap with Buffalo for Drew Stafford.

noooo not soon..not now….Gilbert is a much much better player than chorney, Also I want more from them than just stafford

Trading Gilbert would be absolutely nuts. He is the last defenseman the Oilers should trade.

Agreed. Grebeshkov is going to shoot the moon this summer, even if he falls off this pace by 50%. Gilbert is steady, has a good cap number and two years of UFA in that contract.

I could live with Gilbert for Stafford+, but not straight up.

Hasn’t Lowe liked Stafford forever? Wasn’t he a charter member of the Jim Matheson “Edmonton tried to trade up to get him” Hall of Fame?

Not now

We’re already down two top-sixers. Eventually Oilers may trade one of those puck-movers, but the market isn’t going to diminish. Patience is key.

Fire up the Rexall Jet, it’s headed to Buffalo. :)

not yet…for the love of all that is good and true not yet… Why do people dump on Gilbert? He’s a good, consistent player, produces offensively, is reasonable defensively and signed long term? I agree with Bruce, patience is a must right now. The team doesn’t know what it has with Chorney yet (Poti or Boyle…) and they’re down players. Why force a trade that will really mess with an (admittedly) fragile team chemistry that is only just beginning to come together? A trade of a d-man with the injuries would be bat-shit.

And Tambellini is Robin.
Maybe he will get us a 2nd round pick back.

If Chorney turns into either Poti or Boyle I’d be very happy. I think there’s a pretty good chance he turns into a lesser version of Marc-Andre Bergeron. Trading Gilbert and having Chorney be that last option ends very badly. That said, the Oilers need to move some salary off the books heading into this summer. I think everyone would prefer Staios and Moreau to Gilbert but someone does need to get moved along and transferring some of the money being spent on D up to the forwards is probably a good idea.

It almost has to be Staios. His skillsets are repeated with Peckham and it shaves $2 million from the cap. Chorney doesn’t replace Gilbert’s game – he just imitates it poorly.

I’m actually confused about “shows he’s ready to play”. He has far and away the worst Corsi on the back and he’s got far and away the worst scoring chance differential on the back. He’s almost doubling up Strudwick in the latter category.

He’s showing he can get wrecked and have some luck right now.

And yet Chorney has been better than I’d expected. I was expecting a lot of obvious and terrible turnovers and that hasn’t really happened. I agree with your overall point that he’s not at all ready for the NHL but he’s looked about as good as possible given the extent of his horrible underliers. Also, luck goes a long way in helping organizations make judgments deceiving organizations about what they have with call-ups. It’s really too bad that a small stretch of luck or even truly solid play obscures all of the data that’s been accumulated at the minor league level.

Hey, if the Oilers keep scoring on 1 shot in 3 and the other guys on 1 shot in 30 (as now), Chorney will be a star.

I think we all are giving too much importance to corsi. Corsi is very much related to line-mates just like +-…….The whole thing about our team is that other than O sully no one really shoots the puck untill they are pretty comfortable taking a shot. So many times we end up spending shifts in the other zone and cycle the puck well but don’t shoot much.

Jonathan should do a little post on Chorney’s AHL numbers last year…

The phrase “are you fucking kidding me?” comes to mind. There’s just so many reasons that’s a stupid idea.

I will say it again. Gilbert is a much better defenseman than we give him credit for. He has been a solid mobile 2-way defenseman.

by SumOil on Oct 21, 2009 9:16 AM MDT reply actions

Tom gilbert last season had the same number of points are stafford. If we get stafford + and that has to be significant +, only then i will be ok with the trade
