Around SBN: Newcastle Battle Injury Woes Ahead of Tottenham

Ze plane! Ze plane!

So we know that the owner is once again hunting Moby Dick. We know that Sheldon Souray and Lubomir Vishnovsky are being shopped. We now know the new coach thinks Ales Hemsky is a center, and he doesn't like him one bit. We know the general manager wants to ship out the Lilliputians and bring in a bunch of Gullivers and draft the best player available, but keeping in mind they need to get bigger. I suspect this off-season is going to like stepping into another world. A world where very few of us are going to be happy. As long as what's going to happen is probably close to unimaginable, I'm opening a post for everyone to give me their offseason dreams in the comments. Here's my wildest dreams:

Penner - Horcoff - Hemsky
O'Sullivan - Pavelski - Pisani
Cogliano - Gagner - Gaborik
Jacques - Brodziak - Stortini

Bouwmeester - Gilbert
Vishnovsky - Grebeshkov
Montador - Smid

Peckham

Legace
Labarbera

Trade Souray for Pavelski
Trade Staios, Pouliot and Moreau for picks
Send Nilsson to Florida for the Bouwmeester rights

Sign Bouwmeester, Gaborik, Montador, Legace, Labarbera

$54,958,000

I have no idea if it fits in under the cap or not.

Heatley (7.5) – Horcoff (5.5) – Hemsky (4.1) = 17.1
Penner (4.5) – Gagner (1.625) – Cogliano (1.33) = 7.455
Ward (1.25) – Madden (2) – Pisani (2.5) = 5.75
Pouliot (0.825) – Brodziak (0.85) – Stortini (0.7) = 2.375
SMac (0.537) and JFJ (0.525) = 1.06

Souray (5.4) – Gibert (4) = 9.4
Grebeshkov (3.25)- Bouwmeester (7.5) = 10.75
Smid (1) - Zazon/Odulya (2) = 3
Peckham (0.65) =0.65

Roli/Legace (2)
Drouin-Deslauriers (0.65) = 2.65

Total Cap Hit: 60.19. I know this is still too much, I’ll try and work on it in the afternoon to get it down (but the only thing I can think of, right now, is trade Penner and replace him with Potunley: saving us 3.5 million, but that is not happening).

Deletions: Visnovsky and Nilsson (plus 1st round 2010) for Heatley, Moreau for picks, Staois for picks, and Brule as a cap causality

Why can’t we have both Heatley and Bouwmeester, and a checking line? Why?

by B.C.B. on Jun 18, 2009 8:55 AM MDT reply actions

Oh, I made a mistake on Penners cap hit and I forgot O'Sully: replace Penner with him, and that saves us 1.3 Million. Still leaving us with 58.89 Million cap hit, and that is too much.

Coach: Solid lineup. That team could make a run. Who do you move next year when the team needs to sign Gags and Cogs?

BCB: I'd hope to get JBo cheaper by extending the term.

I'd like the Oilers to be about 3-4 million under the cap. Cap space is going to be at a premium next summer.

I think it depends on the progression of your team. Pisani is UFA, so hopefully you save a million there on him resigning at a better number or you get a replacement for him.

If one of Wilhorntry or Erixon *crosses fingers* progresses, you try and move Gilbert or Vishnovsky.

If Harski, Eberle, Glennie *crosses fingers* progresses, you try and move Penner after his pending 25-30 goal season or O'Sullivan.

If Nash or Vande Velde progreses, you move Brodziak or Pavelski.

I feel Coach's lineup is too small, however it has nice balance to it. If he can make that Pavelski trade on Fantasy Island, then I propose:

Vish + Moreau + Petry + 2nd to DAL for #8 overall.
#8 + #10 + Chorney to TBL for Hedman
Penner + Nilsson to FLA for Horton.
Cogliano + Pouliot to NYI for 2010 1st.
Sign Kotalik. Sign Roli.
Sign Malhotra UFA.
Sign Gaborik UFA.
Sign Gill UFA.
Sign LaBarbra UFA
Pick 1-3 next year.

spOILer - THAT is the kind of Fantasy Island stuff I'm talking about :)

by Coach pb9617 on Jun 18, 2009 2:05 PM MDT reply actions

Figured as much. ;o)

by spOILer on Jun 18, 2009 4:46 PM MDT reply actions

Coach and spOILer:

Do you mean you two think that we might get a checking line like this:
Ward – Madden – Pisani
????

Cause I think it will only happen on Fantasy Island

by B.C.B. on Jun 18, 2009 4:50 PM MDT reply actions

BCB,

No, I think the checking line should be:

O'Sullivan - Pavelski - Pisani

by Coach pb9617 on Jun 18, 2009 5:42 PM MDT reply actions

Hey that is a very expensive checking line at 7.062 Million dollars a year, with two of them having expiring contracts next season. While yours would provide a lot more offense, I think the one I suggested comes with a more reasonable price tag at 5.75 million: plus is a better defensive line, IMO.

I already shed 13 million in salary to make this work. More will be shed in the offseason.

Ok, I love doing this!
Send Souray, Nilsson & Chorney out to San Jose for Maleau
Give the Rangers Penner and a pick for Callaghan
Send Captain Ethan out to the desert for Zbynek Michalek
Staios and Pou out for picks
Sign Havlat for a cap-hit of 5.5m
Sign Bou for a cap hit of 6.5m (long term)
Grab Labarbera for 1m and Nittymaki for 1m
Then we stir, season and bake for half a year:
Havlat-Marleau-Hemmer
Cogs-Gags-Sully
Callaghan-Horcs-Pies
JFJ-Brodz-Zach

Bou-Gilby
Grebs-Vish
Smid-Michalek

Labarbera - Nittymaki

all for the princely sum of 56.3mil.
3 lines of scoring, 1 line of crash n bang. Perfect
With no 13F.
Ah, back to the drawingboard :-(

by Oiler Mag on Jun 19, 2009 4:28 PM MDT reply actions

I still stand by the original line up I suggested, with O'Sully in for Penner:
Heatley – Horcoff – Hemsky
O'Sully – Gagner – Cogliano
Ward – Madden – Pisani
Pouliot – Brodziak – Stortini
SMac and JFJ

Souray – Gibert
Grebeshkov - Bouwmeester
Smid - Zazon/Odulya
Peckham

Roli/Legace
Drouin-Deslauriers

If we use coach's numbers for Bouwmeester then the cap hit is 57.39 M. So Tambo just has to play hard ball with Brodziak and Smid to get them to accept the 10% raise for one year. Play hard ball with Madden, Zazon/Odulya, and Legace and save 1 M between all three players to get under the cap (make sure Legace and Madden are on one year deals, and the Ward is on a short one as well).

Coach: We're going to get bigger and tougher by trading Sheldon Freakin' Souray for Joe Freakin' Pavelski???

Penner - Horcoff - Hemsky
O'Sullivan - Pavelski - Pisani
Cogliano - Gagner - Gaborik

Bouwmeester - Gilbert
Vishnovsky - Grebeshkov

It's hard to imagine a top 13 much softer than that. We'd get run out of all 30 NHL arenas, including our own.

by Bruce on Jun 20, 2009 5:37 PM MDT reply actions

Bigger Huh?

Last time the Oilers traded down at the draft
Well, you all know that painful story...

How about the 10th & Brule for
the 26th, the 31st & Trent Hunter?

Still my heart Mr. Db. That guy is a perfect fit for this (or any) team.

I'd do that before the Islanders had a chance to back out.

by Coach pb9617 on Jun 21, 2009 3:32 PM MDT reply actions

BCB,
I think Madden can be had for the right numbers, mostly because of his age. Which is the same reason I wouldn't want him (altho' I do like him as a player).

That being said, it IS most likely he will sign in NJD, which yes, does make it somewhat fantasy island. Not to mention your 1 yr offer. ;o) (I think he will do better)

I'm not sure of the attraction of Ward, nor do I know if he can play the off-wing, and if his role is more defensive, would you want him playing the off-wing (where the advantages tend to be offensive)?

Penguins 3rd line, BTW, starts with a $4M centre, and I don't really look at the lines and the spending that way. Heck, Madden made $3M/yr on his past contract. Nor do Moreau and Pisani's contracts upset me as much as most.

I prefer a team that can ice fairly balanced scoring over the 3 lines, with the second line in general, reserved for younger offensive players who are learning the other side of the puck, with the 3rd in general, set for the experienced, defensively responsible type players who are still able to score... in fact probably out-score better than the 2nd line.

Bruce...
Yeah, I agree, coach's line-up is even more waterbuggish. As much as he is our best defenseman, I'd still trade Lubo every day before Souray, because to me, Lubo's assets are more closely replicated by Gilbert and Grebs than Souray's.

Nor would JBo make up for the loss of Souray's "piss-cutterness". To me, anyhoo.

by spOILer on Jun 22, 2009 5:16 PM MDT reply actions

False. They started with a 900,000 center.

Agreed. I came up with a better one:

Penner - Horcoff - Hemsky
O'Sullivan - Gagner - Armstrong
Ott - Hanzal - Pisani
Jacques - Brodziak - Stortini

Pouliot

Bouwmeester - Gilbert
Grebeshkov - Visnovsky
