Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Veterans In Danger of Losing Their Jobs

Training camp is an exciting time for fans. With the exception of the entry draft and the first couple of days of free agency, there isn’t much in the summer to keep hockey fans following the game (barring acrimonious disputes over restricted free agent offer sheets). Training camp gives fans their first looks at some prospects, and showcases others.

There is, however, a group of players who are threatened by training camp. These are bubble players, generally, players who had a spot last year, but either underachieved, or have both trade value and a younger player angling for their job. These guys come in all types: (Read more)

I can't see the trading Nilsson: the center piece of the Symth trade (bad optics with fans, and the management has been talk about him since we lost out on his draft).

Grebs + Smid will only go if we get a defenceman back: an a top two (most like top one defenceman) vet back, and he better have a long term contract.

I could see Penner, Moreau (as I said ealier), Strudwick, or MAP being traded

Don't you think the optics of trading Penner would be worse than trading Nilsson?

Jonathan: No.
Oiler fans love/d Symth. and where only so-so on Penner.
Depending what we get back, maybe a 1st, 2nd, 3rd would look like too much.
But if we traded nilsson we are left with Plante and O'Marra: that would be terrible

I'd liken it to the Doug Weight trade. Reasoner and Horacek are long gone, as is Jochen Hecht, who turned into a couple of draft picks. Granted, those picks were Deslauriers and Stoll, but still.

Besides, the emergence of Gagner/Cogliano has fans in a forgiving mood.
